Need help identifying this menu and, oh yeah, reading Chinese

Pages: 1 17 replies

Hi guys -

I found this menu at an antique market over the weekend. Problem is, it has no cover or identifying marks as to what restaurant it came from. The older Asian gentleman that sold it to me couldn't remember where he had gotten it from, but he said that he had tended bar in places from coast to coast. Judging by the food, it looks like it may have been a Chinese restaurant that had an extensive tropical drink menu. Also, as you can see in the pictures, the recipes for each of the drinks is written next to the picture...but at least one of the ingredients in each drink is written in Chinese! Any ideas?

P.S. Sorry for the crappy pictures, I don't have a scanner.

Cant help with the Chinese But nice find, Love those old menus !

Jason, I think I can help you with this. I have a house full of Chinese speaking and reading people right now.

Ironically, it's Chinese New year today.

Let me see about getting this translated.

TM

Judging from the prices, about 15 years old?

OK, The Zombie

1 oz 151 Rum
1/2 oz Orange Juice
1/2 oz Lemon Sour
1/4 oz Guava (I'm guessing Guava Nectar)
1/4 oz Pineapple

Thanks Jim....happy Chinese New Year by the way. Sounds like an awfully sweet Zombie. I'll stick to Don's!

Cool menu. Neat to see all the Orchid of Hawaii ceramic mugs pictured. The arts not too bad either as sometimes you can't make out the details of the mugs so it's nice to see.

Yeah I laughed about the "Mug Not For Sale" too...way to encourage people to steal mugs!

My Zombie translation ended up a little different ~

Zombie

10 oz. 151 Rum
1/2 oz Orange Wine (yes, it says Orange wine not orange juice)
1/2 oz Lemon sour
1/4 oz Red Sugar water (yes, it says Red Sugared Water)
Last line is Add Pineapple juice.

Either way, I won't be trying it. :)

Orange wine = Orange curacao?
Red sugar water = grenadine? Rose's grenadine pretty much fits that bill.

My wahine said orange wine, but it didn't make sense to either of us, so went with Orange Juice. I guessed the guava part based on her description.

I'm sure you're right on this.

Oh I just cut and pasted the translation my friend sent me, she included the notes in parenthesis and I thought they were funny so I left them.

Let's do some more!

Yeah, having spent most of my adult life in the offset printing industry, it bugs the crap out of me too...registration marks people! No wonder offset is dying.

DonĀ“t know if this have something to do with the origins of your menu, but love to mention Covarrubias on every possible occasion. :)

Wow - awfully close isn't it! That's a start, thanks!
