anybody interested in copying their cd collection of tiki music for me?

is there anybody out there looking to increase their good Karma by spreading the tiki spirit???
I am a big fan of the exotic sounds of tiki music and am having a hard time finding them on Kazaa.
i can find a song or two here and there but would love to have the complete copies of these albums.. martin denny,les baxter,don tiki,yma sumac or anything dark and exotic! any of the ones listed in the music section of this website would be great!
i would be happy to pay for any out of pocket expense [shipping, a mai tai for the truoble, etc..]and promise to do the same for anyone wanting the same thing! i am also a part time artist and would be happy to try and work something out!some of my worx will debut shortly!!!!!!

Ya know...why don't you go to your local independant record store, sift through the $1 records and uncover A TON of good hawaiian/exotica music including all the cool graphics and inserts? Isn't the hunt part of the fun? just a thought...maybe I'm old fashoned...and don't want to get sued by the megaconglomeratecorporations.

i just wanted some new music to enjoy, i scored a bunch of old records in an attic, but i dont even know anyone with a record player anymore, so im gonna ebay them except for one that has a wahine on the cover that i cannot let go of... oh well.......

so you just scored a bunch of old records but you want to get rid of those to then have strangers burn new cds for you?

buy a record player & enjoy those records! you could probably get a decent one at a thrift shop for pretty cheap - or buy an adequate new one for around $200.

I was in the same boat a while back. I had some old vinyl and was interested in collecting some more but had no way to play it... Got one of them Crosley Autorama turntable/radios for christmas.
Love it! It looks sweet and the sound is perfect for The Aloha Room. Plus it's got RCA outputs so you can record your albums for playing "elsewhere".

I've bought a couple of really nice record players at garage sales. People don't know what to do with them anymore...so they sell them for $5. don't ebay 'em....play 'em.

I'd be willing to buy some of the records off of you. I think I'm one of the few that still prefers listening to exotica on vinyl versus CD. Shoot me a list if you're interested in selling.

There are cd's of Les Baxter, Martin Denny and Don Tiki readlily available, try Amazon. I have a portable turntable that I recently purchased at Restoration Hardware and if you don't have one of their retail stores nearby, you can go to their website, http://www.restorationhardware.com. It cost about $130.00 or so, and you can take it wherever you go.

Or you could all just listen to Vegas Vic's Tiki Lounge and hear all the vintage, hard-to-get, tiki music you could ever want! :wink:

I'm listening to Vegas Vic's right now! I'm becoming addicted to it, Swank Pad, Devlar Surf and Country Fried Hot Rod. I just got DSL a week ago and with this Matrix gimmick transmitter that sends the audio from my computer to my home stereo I've got Live365 blasting throughout my abode all day long. Improved my quality of life by leaps and bounds!

You can start by going to iTunes and getting some Tiki Cowboys songs!

So you mean it is copyright infringement if you made a CD or tape of music off of vinyl that you bought at the thriftstore? How does the original artist get his share from the secondhand seller??

Thrift stores don’t sell intellectual property (the last time I checked). They sell physical objects. There’s a difference - duh! It doesn’t matter where you bought the records, you don’t own the music or the rights to copy it. Being on an internet forum proofed you can read so check out the covers and the fineprint. My music has been shared and it wasn’t available otherwise - these filesharers are faster than anybody can re-release stuff to be available again, and take any commercial wind out of the music we love.

I think that the copyright on most of the Early Exotica and Tiki recordings is more than "Past it's Sell By Date" i.e. the Artist's permission is no longer required nor the record company's, the copyright on the actual song/tune, is a different matter though.

This topic comes up on a regular basis, some people are under the impression that the composer's permission is required to commercially record a tune/song.. NOT TRUE once the song has been performed in public, it doesn't even need to have a prior recording made. A public performance of a song opens up the material to everyone's use, PROVIDED they pay the correct fees to the appropriate agencies.

AND the copyright laws of the USA and Europe are quite different, which in itself poses a problem, not for the poster but for the viewer/recipient as to the legality of downloading.

To post material HERE (On the Web) for "Educational and Research" purposes is a grey area, but generally (Unless you rip off some pretty new ORIGINAL material) a blind eye is turned to such practises.

I think a big thing about this music is the fun in collecting it....finding it is fun and whilst I dig that you are trying to get started you will find that most people in "the scene" would feel that it is not a comodity which can be bought and sold....it's a discovery group.

Listen to some of the excellent podcasts about...write down the names of the artist and go searching you charity stores, searching online and look for specialist stores.

the internet was young once, before people realized that sharing mp3s was illegal (or perhaps more accurately didn't want to realize), before the RIAA actually went after downloaders. that time is long gone my friend. just go with the flow, if you take the time to hang out here with us, if you are genuinely interested in exotica music, even if money is tight, i'm sure people will gradually hook you up with cheap or even free lps or cds which is of better quality anyway. as the others have said finding is part of the fun.

As crazy as this sounds from a strictly legal stand, this is actually a good point. All the people answering this fellow are doing so from the view of living, producing artists. What about the others - the old or dead ones?

1. Are artists entitled to money from resales of their work? Think about it. Not the first sales, the second or thirdhand sales. Why? Why not? Are then thrift stores actually allowed to resell music? Why? Why not? What if the original record is actually worth a lot more than it did when originally sold - Elvis records, etc. In fact, why shouldn't the artist get a piece?

2. If the original artist is dead, and has no direct family left or a will in place (most don't) - who gets the cash from resales of their music? Why?

3. And then - if the music is not being currently sold or distributed by any publishing house, is it OK to copy the work? Why? Why not?

not sure that i have innovative thoughts on this one. but i'll give it a shot. having been around on the internet since the early 90s like most everyone else here, i can tell you that after the wild west 90s were over, and the RIAA started suing, there was a lot of introspective change in the way people share music. a lot of folks interested in obscure genres like exotica such as ourselves, look towards publicizing old abandoned records that come from defunct publishers and putting them up on mp3 blogs. the rationale for this was that since the records were not published anyway, they are not hurting the income of the artist, dead or alive. now this may or may not be entirely true, since the records companies have recently reissued a lot of old exotica music from the big names(denny, baxter and so forth). as far as i understand from industry sources, the big record companies tacitly tolerate these super-specialized mp3 blogs, because they help publicize obscure music which will not have a market otherwise.

uh wait i just realized that has nothing to do with your original questions about whether artists should benefit from used sales. for the reason that artists and record companies for that matter don't profit from used sales, i'm sure i've read somewhere that the sale of used cd and records is actually illegal. obviously no one has been sued for selling a used cd or lp (yet). that whole idea that reselling records being illegal is completely ludicrous to me.
