'Gilligan's Island' Headed To The Big Screen

Michael Cera (Juno, Superbad) is a candidate to play Gilligan.

Movie studio prop department will probably be making lots of trips to Oceanic Arts in Whittier.

YES!

My boys got us the first two seasons of GI for Valentine's Day (okay I bought it and said it was from them) and we've been watching it over the last couple weeks. It's cool to see that most the humor transcends time and age (the boys are 8 and 11) and the first season is even in B&W. Most evenings, the boys have been asking if we can watch an episode or two.

I just hope that the "modern take" doesn't end up like so many other iconic series have been remade over the years. Otherwise, I think I'd prefer they stay on the island and leave 'em be.

Surviving Original Cast Members:
Russell Johnson (The Professor)
Tina Louise (Ginger Grant)
Dawn Wells (Mary Ann)

Hope they get a cameo spot in the movie.

I hope Cherry Capri will be on it too.

M

BLOODY WEEEAAAKK!!!

B

Lets start guessing who would make the best characters from todays actors!

I'll start with Lindsey Lohan as Ginger!

UB
MR

Rip Torn as the Skipper!

S

I wonder if they'll close it out.....have them rescued at the end. Might make an interesting movie. Have it take up where the series left off, rather than trying to tell the entire story again.

T

They had a TV movie in the 90's (?) where they DID get rescued.

I vote for John Goodman for the skipper...if Michael Cera is Gilligan tho' Goodman may be too old for the part.

I don't know why everyone is getting so excited about this, you know it's going to SUCK !!

Also shouldn't this post be in Bilge ? To bring up a cheesy TV show in a forum that should be reserved for a serious discussion of classic Tiki-style is very inappropriate !! ( :D )

If they're going to go ahead with this, I suggest they take a 360-degree approach and play it as a serious drama.

Also how about casting a total unknown to bring a stamp of Poly-Pop authenticity to the whole production? I think the Bigbro would make a great professor. Can you imagine him in the scene where the castaways take refuge in the Tiki cave? He won't even have to act !!

I think you mean a 180 degree approach.

Well, the tv show was so ridiculous , why should the movie NOT be ? To make it serious would be the worst tragedy of all. Get Jud Apatow to write and produce it, and and give it that wise-ass twist and it would probably be great.

I'da know... a serious version might be quite funny.

With Judd Apatow producing, would that mean Seth Rogen as the Skipper, Steve Carell as the Professor, and Jonah Hill as Gilligan? Oh and of course Leslie Mann and Elizabeth Banks as Maryann and Ginger...not sure which one would be which.

(edited because I forgot to suggest Paul Rudd as Mr. Howell...can't have an Apatow flick without Paul Rudd.)

I can't wait to hear the Gilligan's Island
Gangsta Rap Song
during the closing credits!

P

"gilligan's island" by judd apatow

M

Hahahah great picture!!! LMAO

B

They could go the Adam Sandler route though - just trying to figure out where what's-his-face comes out and says "YOU CAN DO IT!" Oh wait, they already did their homogae to the South Pacific with 50 First Dates!

T

Elizabeth Banks would make a great Maryann !
I like Seth Rogen as The skipper....he'd be funny.

Lets hope the movie does not have characters who are negative racial stereotypes like the TV show had.

I would not mind if the movie had a grenade tossing gorilla.

TS

According to snopes.con, Gilligan is to be played by Snoop Dog and the skipper is to be played by Mike Tyson... Gilligans Izzle fo shizzle!

Just keeddeeng! :P

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss.....................,Whoo Whoo.
Doah! Now I'm stuck up on my celing, groan.....

I agreed with Elizabeth Banks at first, but Mila Kunis, I agree would be ideal as Maryanne.

Except for the fact that neither of them are Amy Adams.

I think they should team up actors Mitch Ryan and Susan Sullivan (The rich parents in the Dharma & Greg TV show) to play Mr. and Mrs. Howell. I think they'd be perfect.

Anyone familiar with iCarly knows that Jerry Trainor would make a great Gilligan.

The marina scenes in the opening credits of the season 2 & 3 Gilligan's Island episodes (the color episodes) were filmed at the Long Beach Alamitos Bay Marina.

And the Long Beach Alamitos Bay Marina is where Busters Beach House is located.

And The Smokin Menehunes are playing at Busters Beachhouse this Sunday (April 25)

So if you go this Sunday, take a look out of the big window at Busters. You may recognize the locations of these 2 shots of the S.S. Minnow leaving for it's 3 hour tour before the weather started getting rough.

I am GLAD you brought this up. Yep! Absolutely. He IS Gilligan!

And if you think about it, he would also make an excellent Jack Tripper should they ever "reboot" Three's company. Every time I watch Icarly with my kid, I see this guy as Tripper! Same manerisms, same totally manic energy! Jeffery Trainor as Jack Tripper!

this one looks like the wedge...

TM

I am pretty sure you are right, and I read somewhere that it was the entrance to NP harbor.

J

If that's the case then Gilligan's Island was was really Catalina Island !!

John Goodman as the Skipper

well, OK, I am not 100 percent sure about that shot. I do know they filmed at L.B. Marina and there is a spot in Alamitos Bay that looks just like that. When you are at Busters , look out the window towards the Ocean and you may see it.

However it could be Newport. Waves are kind of small in that shot so I always assumed it was Long Beach.

but i could be wrong.

Maybe people should go to Busters this Sunday and check it out. And while they are there....

I think your right about that John-O, this was a 1960s show and updating it just would not work.
Maybe everyone should just rent the Porno Version and curse Hollywood for all these remakes!

How about Tony Soprano as the Skipper ?? Actually why not just do it as a movie version of the Sopranos where they all get shipwrecked on an tropical island. I think that's way more interesting and would be way more funny. "Soprano's Island". :)

A standard remake of "Gilligan's Island" is going to SUCK !! You all know it is. Name me one movie version of a TV comedy series that was any good.

J

:o :o :o

I wonder if there's any Tikis ??

[ Edited by: JOHN-O 2010-04-22 22:05 ]

J

Or how about a movie that portrays the cast members after the show ended ??

(When they couldn't get any new work and got screwed out of the rerun royalties and got caught with pot in their car)

"Ginger or Mary Ann ??" You wanna go back and change your answer? :D

I always thought that part was from the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor in Honolulu facing Magic Island at Ala Moana Park.

Here it is modernly

There's a reference to it here

Here's something that resembles a document that say's the marina scenes were filmed in Alamitos Bay in Long Beach, CA

Southern California Filming Locations

And the lagoon on the island was right next to the 101 Freeway

Both Dawn Wells (Mary Anne) and Russell Johnson (the Professor) sign autographs and will mail them out to you if you order from their websites. Nice mementos and they both have a sweet selection of 8x10's. I have them in poker room (along with signed Burt Ward, Adam West and Julie Newmar!)
