The Retro Magazine Covers and Articles thread

Pages: 1 44 replies

I did a search and didn't see a thread dedicated to archiving old magazine covers and articles - so maybe starting one will work out.

Some covers of FATE magazine. Fate magazine was dedicated to those subjects that one needs to believe in when interviewing to be a Ghostbuster. So certainly some easter island statues will turn up eventually - but topless hula girls were likely far more interesting to the boys of the 1950's spending their 35 cents.

Fate January 1957

Fate October 1955

Fate April 1951

Yma Sumac Fate November 1951

Awesome - this thread would also be a nice place to collect links to other threads that already have the scanned material.

Thortiki - more material on that issue you singled out will eventually be here.

Here's a few covers. I'm not sure if they've been posted here or elsewhere. They may be from old eBay auctions. I can't remember.

These are great!! :)

Thanks for posting.

Cheers and Mahalo,
Jeff

Wow, I'd love to see the article for the Yma cover but I figure you'd post that if you could.

Also I'm sitting on quite a few "Jungle Girl" comic and Pulp cover images left over from the Jungle-style thread. I didn't use them since that thread was becoming too "cheesecake" centric. Is this just a Poly-Pop thread? I'm assuming it is.

Also I think you mean "vintage" rather than "retro". The latter would refer to modern covers done in the old-style. I think your intent to only include authentic mid-century content is the correct one.

FYI, sorry for the word-smithing but I've seen other "Exotica Girl" threads get diluted when people started posting random modern images of blonde (!!) hula girls. This thread has started off on the right foot.

Thank You.

You are correct I should have said "vintage". I do not have any hopes for the thread other than to archive and index material as much as a forum is capable of - and naturally the older it is the less likely anyone would be concerned about copyright fair use issues. I wouldn't consider it poly-pop, whatever would be acceptable in any other thread works here.

I expect random issues showed up in many threads in the history of this forum - like the natural history article - and if this thread was merely links to other threads with issues I would consider it a very successful thread.

The Yma issue should show up in the mail one of these days.

Few more here...

There's a great blog HERE with more of this stuff, not all of it is South Pacific based but there's a lot of good stuff including lots of the amazing Mort Künstler ~

OK, I'm not going to post any of his images on this thread BUT if you're interested in modern Pulp art check out artist Richie Fahley.

http://vintage.artehouse.com/perl/collection.pl?productTypeID=1&collectionID=1029&pgNumber=2&seeAllImages=1&itemsPerPage=100

"Pulp Tiki" is a theme of his.

Also based on a lot of these images, I think the whole Nautical Pulp/Paul Page/Skipper Hat/Tiki Gigolo/Castaway look might be a cool Poly-Pop fashion style to pick up on.

IMHO, it beats the silly Fez Shriner look. :)

I used to play bass with The Oyster Pirates.

wow! This is an amazing thread and so valuable to me! Thanks for posting these. I created a faux magazine cover illustration for the launch of my site tikitower.com close to a year ago. I intend to do more covers and this serves as great inspiration!

Thanks again!

This issue of ADAM is an Australian adult magazine (not the ADAM from america).
These scans came from a retroporn forum which appears to be down.
I uploaded the entire issue scans from there here..

A little dangerous to propagate the race on a cliff like that!

More proof that jaguars are tiki.

"Hitler's Global Nympho Brigade" - not Tiki.

I picked up this comic book on e-bay this week.

The comic is dated 1969. Here is a scan from the comic.

If there is an interest I will scan more. I have a page on my website/blog dedicated to my magazine collection. If interested you can check it out here.

Martian-Tiki, those Jaguars do get around.

Jungle Ginger, I agree that the "Hitler's Global Nympho Brigade" article is definitely NOT TIKI but the cover art for "The Yank Who Became a Fertility God" was what I thought was interesting.

Khan Tiki Man, I'll definitely check out your magazine collection. Great Dennis the Menace comic pics! Maybe we should keep things divided up for future searches by keeping the comic stuff in this thread, though:

http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=25838&forum=1&start=30&hilite=tikis%20in%20comics

It's easy to get the pulp fiction paperback covers, pulp magazine covers, and comics art mixed up sometimes since it's all paper, but I'd like to see all three threads thriving instead of having to dig through one big one.

Trader Tom, thanks for pointing out the comics thread. I hadn't seen that. I am going to scan some more and I will post there. Mahalo, Khan Tiki Mon.

Admittedly the "fantastic adventures" poster may be influenced as much by the book of Genesis as it is by hula girl imagery.

Where can I subscribe to "South Sea Stories" magazine? :)

More on ebay - wow these are expensive

Wow, what eye candy! Great title, and I like the way she strikes her Dorothy Lamour pose while holding a knife in the other hand!
And then the previous post's title: " I saw 1 Million Girls for Sale!" Priceless! (well, actually, rather pricey..)

Dang, there were some downright imaginative and skilled pulp artists, back then!

Thought is, some might have previously painted girls and other nose art on the Flying Forts, Liberators, Mitchells, Marauders, Superforts...a decade earlier.

But it's got an old vibe to it, so here it is.

Jeez. My image of the South Pacific as this tranquil paradise has been shattered. Guns, knives, spears, machetes...even boxing gloves and quite possibly torpedoes. Batten down the hatches, it's going to be a stormy night!
