This is Bilge after all!

Up first for me is one of my favorites - John Hartford: John was a champion for river boats, and life on the river. The world lost a great deal when it lost John Hartford. There just isn't much out there on him on you-Tube unfortunately. He wrote this and many, many other great tunes. I had the good fortune to see him play several times prior to his death. They were some of the best shows I've ever seen.

Good Album:

PS this thread moved from Bilge to here :)

Of interest to upright bass players would be the "snare" drum apparatus he has attached to his bass, (and is seen playing with brushes). This is just one way that Nashville and Country musicians avoided the unspoken ban on drums in early country music.

And there are some new boys, keeping the style alive!

This is Wayne The Train Hancock. The hula girls opened for him last year in Long Beach.....

Whoa! Some most excellent feed back  I'm kinda shocked really :) I wasn't expecting that.

Your right, there are many good people still keeping these sounds alive (Go Wayne the Train!)...Like Willie (mentioned above), Doc Watson is a living legend. Blind at birth, Doc's play goes way back. He and his son Merle (not in this linked video) played on stage together everywhere. Merle was extremely talented in his own right. Unfortunately, Merle was killed on the family farm by a tractor a I believe.

When we opened for Wayne, we were standing outside the club and he came out and was talking with us. You just could not find a nicer guy! Tobacco chewing, accent so thick you could barely understand him and a sly grin! What a guy! No pretention, no attitude (you kind of expect a bit of a tude with most rockabilly artists). But, Wayne is the real deal. A total Southern Gentleman in every way. Plus, this music he plays goes far beyond rockabilly. It's western swing and real early country, but not just some tribute or retro-thing. It's current, and what you would have heard had you lived back in the early 50's in the south. As I recall, there may have been only two of our tiki central friends that made it out to the show we did with him. What a shame, as it was a great show this man did!

Russell Scott and his red hots were on the same bill with us:

And here is another modern country artist we opened for: Michael Ubaldini

And here is someone we would LOVE to open for! The GREAT Junior Brown!

And the awesome Brian Jay! (This is the band Dartin Menny (kevin Stewart) used to play with)

Another modern country classic! Dwight Yoakam!

Awesome.
Thanks for all the links, as I don't know a lot of this stuff, I'm always interested in discovering new musicians.

Well there ya go partners...we've moved up from the paper cup status of Bilge to the glassware status of Beyond Tiki...

With that...let's jump back a little - Mr. Eddy Arnold a singin' Cattle Call

PS: Eddy's "Streets of Laredo" was always one of my favorites too :)
