Dark Exotica / Lounge finds?

Pages: 1 39 replies

I'm currently compiling a compilation for my blog 'Dark & Tiki', which a twist on the whole subculture/sub genre in which I am looking at the dark side of the Tiki.

I have a few bands going such as;

Bohren & der Club of Gore: a Dark Jazz/Lounge ensemble from Germany
The Kilimanjaro Dark Jazz Ensemble: a sort of Exotica/Lounge/Jazz group from Europe
Heroin and Your Veins: a total lounge act ala Twin Peaks/Bohren style
Dale Cooper Quartet & the Dictaphones: a dark jazz/lounge/twin peaks styled group from France

There is ALOT more out there, and I'm open to NEW & OLD records!

Thanks for looking and I appreciate the help!!!

The group Walk the Plank may fit your criteria. There is currently an active thread about them. I just saw them at Hukilau 2010 and really dug them.

Kava Kon would definitely fit the bill!

Shit, even my side projects would work!

Resonance, 10-Speed Guillotine, Weird Lovemakers!

Let me know where to upload/send some tracks.

Good luck with the project, sounds intriguing!

Cheers and Mahalo,
Jeff

I JUST posted my FIRST podcast up!

Have a listen to get an idea where this is all going!

Awesome, I like the link between those styles. Wow, new bands to listen too.

Blue Hawaiians kind of fit too.
In a more electronic way, I like Andrew Pekler's latest album. : http://www.youtube.com/user/andrewpekler#p/u/2/vI_TWdVTP3g
Tipsy too.
John Zorn's "Gift","Taboo and Exile" and The Dreamers" and "O'o"

Or Garbarek and others at ECM did some ambiant jazz.

But I think I'm out of what you're looking for...

It's a really tight rift in the Exotica/Lounge sub-genre. I'm convinced there's some older recordings that were more on the darker side. Like Les Baxter's early work with Samuel Hoffman, extremely fascinating to hear such early orchestral songs accompanied by Theremin!

All those early recordings are my favorites, but I'm sifting through tons of old records in search for the Dark & Tiki!

I like the thrill of the hunt in case you haven't noticed!

The Passions - Les Baxter with Bas Sheva

can get pretty dark and nasty!

I want to say I just SAW that record recently! I need to pick that one up! I loved the Ritual of the Savage album, but I'll go back and see if it's still there! Thanks!!

Not Exotica really,
but the Vanduras have some very dark songs.

The Vanduras are pretty awesome! Good find, and thanks for sharing. I like the smooth surf textures.. Another band to spotlight in the future!

In terms of tiki noir, you might be interested in my group's work... particularly the songs "Totem Pole," "Octopus Menagerie," and/or "Left Arm of Buddha" off of Adventures in Paradise; "Tiki,""Similau," and/or "When First I Love," off of New Sounds of Exotica; "Hana, Maui" from Paradise Lost and Found, "Wadada" from Rendezvous in Okonkuluku, and "Bwana, Bwana A","Cave of Uldo," "Plamingo Flagoda," "Fuzzy Mammoth Breath," and "Satyritar" off of Charred Mammal Flesh: Exotic Music for BBQ.

All are available from iTunes or http://WAITIKI.com/Shop. Just search for "WAITIKI" or "WAITIKI 7".

no worries! It's mostly to be played in the background of my Podcasts really. As far as my compilation goes, I'm going through proper channels to include artists and their tracks with proper production and credit.

Thanks!! I'm going to have a listen now..

LOVED the sounds on your page! Very traditional styled yet modern and original! I better get to downloading some of this later tonight!

Any more recommendations?! I know lots of you have peeked on the topic!

Mahalo! Thanks Carlos for checking out our music. Hope it helps fill that "tiki noir" craving.

definitely did! can't wait to find more scores!

The Waitiki 7 is THE best Exotica project out there anywhere! As good if not better than most of the original artists sounded live. Big big fan...

definitely good sounds from them.

Have any of you picked up any of Deadbolt's records? They're a personal favorite of mine, not necessarily part of this thread, but I just did a little spot about them on my Dark & Tiki blog if anyone wants to take a read and check it out?

http://darkandtiki.blogspot.com/2010/06/music-deadbolt.html

Carlos,

I had not heard about the new Deadbolt cd.
thanks for mentioning that in your blog.

Jeff(btd)

Deadbolt does an awesome cover of "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head"...

wow, very interesting sounds from Sweden!

I fairly recently found this Russian band called Messer Chups. They're something like Man? or Astro-man meets Rev. Horton Heat, meets Tiki.. very bizarre band!

Haven't heard the Messer Chups before. Great Stuff. Perhaps it's worth a trip to Finland or down in Europe?! :) I saw they have plenty of shows booked.

Another cool and bizarre band I found was the Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation.

not too exotica esque, but definitely a strange form of Jazz and Lounge..

Hope this fits the criteria. Listening to it in my home bar with the lights turned low always gives me an eerie feeling.

**ALICE ARMAND "To Hawaii's Shore"**

I like it because it's SLOW, and definitely eerie! Is this an old track? It's hard to tell these days what's new, and what's old!

The Hula Girls' new album has a super cool exotica song on it. Stright from Lex Baster-land... It features the master of haunting steel guitar, Blue Hawaiian, Gary Brandin, on it. It also features the drummer of punk legends, X, DJ Bonebrake, on vibes... Crazy Al is on there too, playing coconuts and performing bird calls and other jungle sounds...

Anyway, we called it 'The Hidden Village' in tribute to the back room at Don the Beachcombers... The album art was shot at Don's too.... You'll be able to preview the song on iTunes, shortly, but as of now, you can order the album here:

It's seriously one of my favorite tracks on the album!!

Agreed.

It was originally posted on **WAXIDERMY** and according to them it's old (1940s?) although they don't seem to know much more about it than that.

Subsequent internet searches for Ms.Armand have turned up very little besides bit parts ("Clerk,"Secretary," "Model," etc.) in several movies circa 1940.

Scant biographical information often enhances a weird record's appeal.
