Dark Exotica / Lounge finds?

I'm currently compiling a compilation for my blog 'Dark & Tiki', which a twist on the whole subculture/sub genre in which I am looking at the dark side of the Tiki.

I have a few bands going such as;

Bohren & der Club of Gore: a Dark Jazz/Lounge ensemble from Germany
The Kilimanjaro Dark Jazz Ensemble: a sort of Exotica/Lounge/Jazz group from Europe
Heroin and Your Veins: a total lounge act ala Twin Peaks/Bohren style
Dale Cooper Quartet & the Dictaphones: a dark jazz/lounge/twin peaks styled group from France

There is ALOT more out there, and I'm open to NEW & OLD records!

The group Walk the Plank may fit your criteria. There is currently an active thread about them. I just saw them at Hukilau 2010 and really dug them.

Kava Kon would definitely fit the bill!

But I think I'm out of what you're looking for...

It's a really tight rift in the Exotica/Lounge sub-genre. I'm convinced there's some older recordings that were more on the darker side. Like Les Baxter's early work with Samuel Hoffman, extremely fascinating to hear such early orchestral songs accompanied by Theremin!

All those early recordings are my favorites, but I'm sifting through tons of old records in search for the Dark & Tiki!

I like the thrill of the hunt in case you haven't noticed!

The Vanduras are pretty awesome! Good find, and thanks for sharing. I like the smooth surf textures.. Another band to spotlight in the future!

no worries! It's mostly to be played in the background of my Podcasts really. As far as my compilation goes, I'm going through proper channels to include artists and their tracks with proper production and credit.

The Waitiki 7 is THE best Exotica project out there anywhere! As good if not better than most of the original artists sounded live. Big big fan...

definitely good sounds from them.

Haven't heard the Messer Chups before. Great Stuff. Perhaps it's worth a trip to Finland or down in Europe?! :) I saw they have plenty of shows booked.

Hope this fits the criteria. Listening to it in my home bar with the lights turned low always gives me an eerie feeling.

I like it because it's SLOW, and definitely eerie! Is this an old track? It's hard to tell these days what's new, and what's old!

The Hula Girls' new album has a super cool exotica song on it. Stright from Lex Baster-land... It features the master of haunting steel guitar, Blue Hawaiian, Gary Brandin, on it. It also features the drummer of punk legends, X, DJ Bonebrake, on vibes... Crazy Al is on there too, playing coconuts and performing bird calls and other jungle sounds...

Anyway, we called it 'The Hidden Village' in tribute to the back room at Don the Beachcombers... The album art was shot at Don's too.... You'll be able to preview the song on iTunes, shortly, but as of now, you can order the album here:

It was originally posted on **WAXIDERMY** and according to them it's old (1940s?) although they don't seem to know much more about it than that.

Subsequent internet searches for Ms.Armand have turned up very little besides bit parts ("Clerk,"Secretary," "Model," etc.) in several movies circa 1940.

Scant biographical information often enhances a weird record's appeal.
