I'm partial to "Toes on the Nose"... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLODTV3qzzY Please let there be some smokin' saxophone at the show !! Some might consider Eddie as #2 to Dick Dale's #1 but you know what ?? At least Eddie never tried to sing. :) Also Tikiphiles in attendence must drink double their normal quantity of Tropical cocktails to make up for the teetotaling Surf Music geeks. This will encourage Art to have more Surf Music events in the Tiki bar. |

There's no doubt this will be a fun event with great music, but next Sat might also be a unique pop cultural milestone. If you think of two enduring mid-century art forms, that were both native to Southern California, what comes to mind ?? Yes Tiki-style and Surf Music !! In BigTikiDude's upcoming event, you have legendary icons for both. Don the Beachcomber was inarguably the Poly-Pop seed that sprouted Tiki-style. Now while the Sunset Beach DTBC is not an original Don's, it's certainly an authentic Tiki palace that is true to the brand. Also while Dick Dale is considered "The King of the Surf Guitar", consider that the Bel-Air's "Mr. Moto" was actually released BEFORE Dick Dale's first hit "Let's Go Trippin". I'm not sure if Eddie will physically be able to attend, but his discography will be performed, some songs by musicians of that era. And has a Surf Music event of this size (arguably enough bands to be considered a festival) ever taken place in a mid-century Tiki establishment ?? Please consider the documented link between the two cultures, i.e. the "Surfin' Tiki" chapter in BOT and the "Tiki Surfah" chapter of "Pop Surf Culture" (by Brian Chidester & Domenic Priore, a book lesser known on TC but invaluable reading). Also both "art forms" peaked right before the rise of the 1960's counter culture and experienced a revival decades later. (Approx 20 years for Surf Music and 30 years for Tiki). This is a pretty cool combo if you ask me. :) [ Edited by: JOHN-O 2011-01-28 00:35 ] |

What a great event !! Surf music legends and some of the best of the Third Wave playing 8 hours of non-stop music in a historic Tiki palace. And all for a great cause !! This was a great celebration of tribal love and community. :) A big THANK YOU to BigTikiDude for organizing such a fantastic day. Everyone had a great time and from what I understand successfully raised a lot of well needed funds for Eddie. The room(s) were packed... Here's BTD with Eddie who was able to attend for a short time... I wish I could have gotten more shots of the bands but it was super crowded up near the stage. The highlight of the event was former Bel-Airs and Showmen jamming through some of their classics. That's Paul Johnson second from left, Dick Dodd (and former Mouseketeer) on drums, and DTBC regular (and former Nocturne) Jim Frias on sax. I forgot the person who was channeling Eddie but he was great (help BTD). Here's the Eliminators with Surf music historian (and 2nd-Wave Nightrider) Jon Blair second from left. They did a stunning Surf music version of "Bali Hi". Tiki Central role call for the day... left (Trevor, Tiki Kitty, "Ding Dong Devil" Caltiki), right (Chris of chrisandsarahb, Dinah, "Hula Girl" Spike) left ("Insect Surfer" JonPaul, Mr. J), right (Jungle Ginger, Atomic Tiki Punk, Mrs. Caltiki) left (Kick The Reverb & his daughter), right (Whorehay aka Mambo King & Dana) Oops, I can't find HappyChi in any of my pictures. Sorry Stacey. And oh yeah, Crazy Al showed up towards the end. [ Edited by: JOHN-O 2011-02-06 11:14 ] |
