Pages: 1 2 89 replies

So a little history real quick,
If Dick Dale is the King of Surf Guitar,
Eddie Bertrand is #2.
Kinda like Arthru Lyman, and Martin Denny are #1 for Exotica.
Eddie was Originally in the Bel Airs of "Mr. Moto" fame, (first surf song)
Then after that he formed the Amazing Eddie and the Showmen(Squad Car)

I'm Doing a Big Benefit show to raise money for Eddie Bertrand.
He's had a couple falls and broken his hips.
And he is on Hard times.
So some friends and I are puttin together
a big show of Love for Eddie.

if you can't make the show,
and want to Donate to a fund for Eddie,
see here:

I'm partial to "Toes on the Nose"...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLODTV3qzzY

Please let there be some smokin' saxophone at the show !!

Some might consider Eddie as #2 to Dick Dale's #1 but you know what ?? At least Eddie never tried to sing. :)

Also Tikiphiles in attendence must drink double their normal quantity of Tropical cocktails to make up for the teetotaling Surf Music geeks. This will encourage Art to have more Surf Music events in the Tiki bar.

John,

almost all of Eddie's songs are great,
my favorite is "Border Town"

There will be Some Sax at the show.
Jim Frias of the 60's band the Nocturnes,
will be playing with the Legends Jam doing songs of the Bel Airs,
and Eddie and the Showmen.
And The Eliminators have a Great Sax player too.
Both of these guys wail.

as for Drinking,
I was told that both of the Back Bars will be open,
as well as the front bar.
I think there may be Beer specials.

Jeff(btd)

There's no doubt this will be a fun event with great music, but next Sat might also be a unique pop cultural milestone.

If you think of two enduring mid-century art forms, that were both native to Southern California, what comes to mind ?? Yes Tiki-style and Surf Music !!

In BigTikiDude's upcoming event, you have legendary icons for both.

Don the Beachcomber was inarguably the Poly-Pop seed that sprouted Tiki-style. Now while the Sunset Beach DTBC is not an original Don's, it's certainly an authentic Tiki palace that is true to the brand.

Also while Dick Dale is considered "The King of the Surf Guitar", consider that the Bel-Air's "Mr. Moto" was actually released BEFORE Dick Dale's first hit "Let's Go Trippin". I'm not sure if Eddie will physically be able to attend, but his discography will be performed, some songs by musicians of that era.

And has a Surf Music event of this size (arguably enough bands to be considered a festival) ever taken place in a mid-century Tiki establishment ??

Please consider the documented link between the two cultures, i.e. the "Surfin' Tiki" chapter in BOT and the "Tiki Surfah" chapter of "Pop Surf Culture" (by Brian Chidester & Domenic Priore, a book lesser known on TC but invaluable reading).

Also both "art forms" peaked right before the rise of the 1960's counter culture and experienced a revival decades later. (Approx 20 years for Surf Music and 30 years for Tiki).

This is a pretty cool combo if you ask me. :)

[ Edited by: JOHN-O 2011-01-28 00:35 ]

Very cool,
thanks for that Post John O.

and I am pretty sure that Eddie will be there.

Update,
Jimmy Roberts, Dick Dodd, and Art Fisher, of the Bel Airs will be there,
and playing in the Bel Airs portion of the event.

Jeff(btd)

one week away,
lets spread the word about the show,
and fundraiser.
thanks Jeff(btd)

Hey All,

please read about this Fundraiser for Eddie Bertrand.
event starts at 2 pm, goes to 10 pm
but I would recommend getting there at noon or 1 pm for a good seat.
20 dollars cash at the door, sorry no credit cards for entrance or raffle tix, but..
Credit cards will be taken for food and drink purchases.

How amazing is this going to be?
http://on.fb.me/gagT89"

thanks sir.

Jeff(btd)

Venture Mania is playing?? Awesome!
...and fyi, I have one of those Nocturne pedals. They sound great! Like a pre-amp that really boosts and clarifies your tone and signal.
This is gonna be a killer event! Did I mention that yet?

Spike,

I'd like to hear that pedal demo sometime.

Jeff(btd)

You can see demos from the builder of the pedal, here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylqsgzHR7j8&feature=related
It was originally designed to give your Gretsch guitar the bite that Setzer gets in his tone... Cool pedal... I don't use it in The Hula Girls though.

I'm really happy that some of you are planning on coming to this event.
:)

Jeff(btd)

Steve Irvin Surfboards has donated this fantastic 9' longboard. It will be available in the raffle or silent auction. The board will be signed by The Eliminators and hopefully Eddie. A huge thank you to Steve Irvin Surfboards for their generosity.

Wow. Step back and think for a minute. A surfboard, guitar, effect pedal, band merch, and money via paypal all donated by members of this site. Not to mention the time and care donated by Jeff and other organizers, and the time & talent & music of the bands playing. It's pretty awe inspiring to see such an amazing level of support just to help someone (a surf legend, but still, just one person). Truly amazing Smile

This transcends social networking. This is true community, and I am honored to be a part of it. You are all awesome Smile

What a great event !!

Surf music legends and some of the best of the Third Wave playing 8 hours of non-stop music in a historic Tiki palace.

And all for a great cause !! This was a great celebration of tribal love and community. :)

A big THANK YOU to BigTikiDude for organizing such a fantastic day.

Everyone had a great time and from what I understand successfully raised a lot of well needed funds for Eddie.

The room(s) were packed...

Here's BTD with Eddie who was able to attend for a short time...

I wish I could have gotten more shots of the bands but it was super crowded up near the stage. The highlight of the event was former Bel-Airs and Showmen jamming through some of their classics. That's Paul Johnson second from left, Dick Dodd (and former Mouseketeer) on drums, and DTBC regular (and former Nocturne) Jim Frias on sax. I forgot the person who was channeling Eddie but he was great (help BTD).

Here's the Eliminators with Surf music historian (and 2nd-Wave Nightrider) Jon Blair second from left.

They did a stunning Surf music version of "Bali Hi".

Tiki Central role call for the day...

left (Trevor, Tiki Kitty, "Ding Dong Devil" Caltiki), right (Chris of chrisandsarahb, Dinah, "Hula Girl" Spike)

left ("Insect Surfer" JonPaul, Mr. J), right (Jungle Ginger, Atomic Tiki Punk, Mrs. Caltiki)

left (Kick The Reverb & his daughter), right (Whorehay aka Mambo King & Dana)

Oops, I can't find HappyChi in any of my pictures. Sorry Stacey.

And oh yeah, Crazy Al showed up towards the end.

Great Photos John-O.
They always capture the fun of the moment at these events.

Thanks for the pics JOHN-O!

Mr. Jay, you are a true celebrity in my book, and Spike, thanks for the mai tai! BigTikiDude, you are promoter extraordinaire! Big mahaloz for all your hard work, dedication, and good will.
