John O,
thanks for the pics,
and here is my Thank you post form SG101.

Needless to say,
I am completely exhausted.
but extremely happy in the turn out of the event.
Such a Huge outpouring of love, and generosity towards Eddie.

Thanks again go out to Tim(HB Kahunna)
Matt Quilter of the Reventlos and John Benton for the Amps,
Dusty Watson for the Drums.
To Mike and Sandy from 9th Wave for helping my Dad, and me.
(you guys are just so kind) I owe you big time.
Thanks Dad for running the front door with Mike n Sandy.

Thanks goes out to Don the Beachcomber in HB.
they graciously let us use the room for the day/night.
and I hope that they were pleased with the turnout.

Thanks to so many of you who came from Far away for this.

and most of all,
Thanks to all of the bands that gave their time for this benefit.

I got so many congrats.
but I am just the Organizer.

What a great event !!

Surf music legends and some of the best of the Third Wave playing 8 hours of non-stop music in a historic Tiki palace.

And all for a great cause !! This was a great celebration of tribal love and community. :)

A big THANK YOU to BigTikiDude for organizing such a fantastic day.

Everyone had a great time and from what I understand successfully raised a lot of well needed funds for Eddie.

The room(s) were packed...

Here's BTD with Eddie who was able to attend for a short time...

I wish I could have gotten more shots of the bands but it was super crowded up near the stage. The highlight of the event was former Bel-Airs and Showmen jamming through some of their classics. That's Paul Johnson second from left, Dick Dodd (and former Mouseketeer) on drums, and DTBC regular (and former Nocturne) Jim Frias on sax. I forgot the person who was channeling Eddie but he was great (help BTD).

Here's the Eliminators with Surf music historian (and 2nd-Wave Nightrider) Jon Blair second from left.

They did a stunning Surf music version of "Bali Hi".

Tiki Central role call for the day...

left (Trevor, Tiki Kitty, "Ding Dong Devil" Caltiki), right (Chris of chrisandsarahb, Dinah, "Hula Girl" Spike)

left ("Insect Surfer" JonPaul, Mr. J), right (Jungle Ginger, Atomic Tiki Punk, Mrs. Caltiki)

left (Kick The Reverb & his daughter), right (Whorehay aka Mambo King & Dana)

Oops, I can't find HappyChi in any of my pictures. Sorry Stacey.

And oh yeah, Crazy Al showed up towards the end.

not a Trad surf band, but amazing none the less.

I don't like to review my own gigs,
but here is a post from SG101 that sums up the day pretty well.

A wonderful show today at Don's. Reminded me of the SG101 convention shows that I attended. There was over 8 hours of great bands and good times. There was a ton of love for Eddie, for surf, and for each other. There were more than a few choked-up and teary eyed people during various points of the show. Eddie was in attendance, but unfortunately couldn't play. He was grinnin' from ear-to-ear, blown away that so many people cared so much to help him.

A brief rundown:

The Men of Mystery: terrific Shadows tribute band; nice way to open the show.

The Riptides: solid and fun tradition-style surf. Good set.

Bel Airs Reunion: Paul Johnson, Dick Dodds, the original keyboard player, Jim Frias on sax, and (as PJ Moto said) Matt Quilter was channeling Eddie Bertrand. Artie Fisher joined in on the last three songs. Smiles and joy, everywhere. Pure magic.

The Eddie and the Showmen Tribute Band was a great enegetic set by John Benton and John Blair on guitars, Dick dodds on drums, JIm Frias on sax, and Matt on bass. Smiles all around. Magic.

The Secret Sammurai fllored everybody with their jaw-dropping virtuosity.

The Outerwave played a solid traditional-style set, whcih inclued a cool version of the Mermen's "Curve".

Ventures-Mania, featuring Deke Dickerson was off-the-hook in energy, authenticty, and volume. It's not often that you hear Showmnan amps breaking-up. Very cool, but only 15 minutes long.

Slacktone: no words can describe the greatness of these guys. Wow!!! Worship Worship Worship

The Eliminators: GREAT, GREAT GREAT! (How is it that the tone of these guys through the same backline sounded significantly better than every band tha preceded them?) Awesome!

The Insect surfers: always a favorite of mine. They played a lot of very cool new material. Can't wait for the next CD! Phenomenal set.

It was great seeing so many SG101'ers there, many having travelled great distances through miserable conditions to make it to the show.

A wonderful day. Now I'm going to sleep.

Thank you Jeff, That was an amazing show. All the bands were just great. You really know how to put on a party. Thanks again.

Any info on the convention, Place, Bands. And what going to happen in the south bay?

Surf Fink,

thanks for coming and the comments.

The SG101 convention will be Sat. Aug. 13th,
at the Starting Gate in Los Alamitos, across the street from the Los Alamitos horse racing track.
The Bands are 95% confirmed I should be announcing the line up soon.

No plans for a South Bay version of the Eddie Benefit as of now,
but we are thinking about it.
If we do it, it will probably be in a few months.
stay tuned,

Thanks again to the Tiki Folks who came to this.
I am prod of you for gettin' it.

A great day with fantastic performances. It was a pleasure to be a part of it, and I hope the money raised will somehow make Eddie's life just a little simpler.

I also wanted to note what an awesome job our server did. She must have visited our table over fifty times throughout the course of the day. K
udos to Don's for staffing the event so well.

Jeff - I didn't know until reading one of your notes above that it was your dad that was working the entrance. I remembered him fondly from The Hula Girls / Tequila Worms show. What a great guy. :)
Also, I know you don't like to have the spotlight turned on you, but you worked incredibly hard leading up to and during this event, and you deserve a great deal of credit. It all went very smoothly - a testament to your efforts.
Well done, Sir!

SF

Yes, I agree Don's staff were excellent. And your Dad's a cool guy.
And back a few post you mention some in the south bay coming. That would be another Eddie concert, Great. Thanks

Thanks Deanna for the very kind compliments.

and Yes Surf Fink,
a possible other benefit for Eddie.

Eddie Bertrand passed away this morning (Sat, Oct 27th, 2012) and will be remembered through his music as one of the founding members of the legendary Bel Airs and the seminal Eddie & the Showmen...

RIP

such a sad day in the surf community.
Eddie will be missed.

for those not fortunate enough to see Eddie play recently(few years ago)
with the Eliminators. here is a link to a bunch of Videos.

and here is a pic of Eddie Kicking ass, and wowing the crowd, just like he was still a teenager, taken at the 1st SG101 convention. It was truly an honor to have a legend playing at an event that I put on.

miss ya, and RIP Eddie.
