My name is John AKA Tikiskip.
Living in Columbus, Ohio.
I make and sell tiki lights for bars.
Below is my logo By Sam Gambino.
Here are some of my past works.
Most are sold.
Going to number theses lights so that if you have a question about a
light or other you can just give a number.

My first light here has to be the "Skip float"
I call it this as it was my creation have never seen a light like it.
It comes in red and green even made a gold one once.
Green is hard to find.
This is the one lots of people want and I sell a lot of them.

Damn good stuff! You and Kahaka make the coolest lamps. What size are the float lamps?
Your rope tying is excellent.

Skip, I've been a fan of your lamps fo evva. Your love of detail, your aging techniques, the visible time spent on each piece make them the only lamps I would hang among my vintage ones. One day I am gonna get me one of those cork ones!

I showed Bill Sapp one of my lights once and he thought it
was from his restaurant the Kahiki!
And Polynesiac You and Tiki Diablo got me started
on these lights.
I would look at your floats and say i'm going to do that one day.
Was talking with Danny at Coon tiki bout rattan and he said just heat it and bend it.

Although I do make most of my lights from the ground up sometimes I get lucky and find old parts
that help with that old look. (as seen below)
Because they ARE old, it's hard to get that patina.
And that is THE goal, to get them to look like the old lights.
The book of Tiki was the guide I used to
get ideas for lights.
Plus that book threw gas on the small flam that was tiki and kept it
going and getting bigger so I could sell lights!!

Here is the Boylan Barrel I named it after the
person who called and said "look John I need something
more nautical than tiki" (Think super cool NY accent)
Amy I could talk to you for hours.
She is a supporter of many tiki artists.
I have lights in every home, tea shop and rest type stop she
has and that is a great honor.

PS most of these have a different message on the inside of the copper
sleeve(the part you can't see unless you take them apart)

Skipster, thank you so much for that amazing lamp, it is so boootiful! It now hangs next to an O.A. lamp in my library:

Besides everything else you do on your lamps, I was looking at your rope and knot work, and can only compare it to the genre of Sailor's Fancy Work, the kind of craft projects that sailors kept themselves busy with during long sea voyages.

Unlike well-known Scrimshaw, rope and knot fancy work is an under-appreciated art form well suited for the Tiki Lounge.

I found this piece, converted from an empty rum bottle, in my home port of Hamburg:

You hit the nail on the head Sven.
When my wife and I went to San Diego
I went to the ship museums there.
Being on those old ships and seeing the rope work
was so awesome. ( I shold live near an ocean)
You are cheating yourself if you don't go to these musems at some
point in life.
Came home with tons of close up photos of knotts.
Found this book while there.
It's not cheap but worth the money.

And I love those old roped bottles!

For all the rope art enthusiasts (forgive me if I digress, Skip), here is another great use for the material I haven't seen that often:

In Santa Monica there was a street with TWO Tiki-titled apartment buildings. The first one was the TIKI, of which I believe I published this photo in my books:

Now rope FRAMING is cool, but what I really liked was what they did for the TIKI TOO, down the street from the Tiki:

Unfortunately, by the time I got to document it (in Sept.'93), the lettering had somewhat decayed, so I never used it for publication.
But I often wondered about the way it must have looked in its heyday, hoping an original photo would surface some day.
Probably as cool as this rope font:

In winter I collect the stuff needed to make lights with.
This year I have found A LOT of stuff.
Plus I have many lights ready to sell now, Need to sell at an event as some are too big to ship.

Like your burnt paper and your heavy netted floats,that's what float lamps are suppose to look like! So,any clues on the burnt paper? Neil

I would say it's less about the paper and more about finding different kinds
of things to make lights out of.
There are Sooo many papers you can buy now, it's all about finding that paper
you really like to use.
Two of the papers I use are ones you can't find anymore, But then I buy lots when
I find one I like.
Anybody can take $80.00 dollar a sheet tapa and make a light thats cool, but then you add like $20.00
to make it a light well you are not going to make much on that one, I can't get $200.00 plus ship
for a light in Ohio.
I try to keep my price low so people can aford these lights, heck you need like 20 or more for a good bar.
