Hewey posted this when it was hot news four years ago: But with the recent wildfire spread of the eagle snatching a kid "kindersnatchen" (CGI from some enterprising students in Montreal) I think it might be time to consider a drink or a mug design for the extinct Te Hokioi (aka Haast's Eagle, Te Pouakai) An article from 2009 when published research hit the news: Popular Eagle snatching kid video if you missed it: Contemporary talking pole: I've looked for petroglyph images described in some narratives for visual inspiration, but can not find a photo (may be protected or sacred site, or simply few photos). A war canoe in the Auckland museum has one carved as part of its prow, but I wanted to confirm this is accurate or just conjecture before posting. |

I see that Te Pouakai may be a prefered name to reference. There appears to be some ambiguity between the name Te Hokioi and Te Hakawai a type of snipe also with important legends. |
