Yay!!!!!!!!!!

Killer !!

I know I should post these questions in general discussion area.
But let's start here, and see who bites.

1.Have you heard the Blue Hawaiians?
2. If not, Have you heard of them, but not heard their music?
3. When you see the name, do you think-
They play Hawaiian music and not, lounge, tiki, surf, hybrid?

If you haven't heard them,
Try here:

Or here:

That's THREE questions. Do we have a choice of which one to answer?

GROG' answer is YES, but it's not the right answer to all three questions.

It's good to know that medical procedure didn't mess
With Grog's funny bone, or smart ass.

The Marine Room! I have not been there since the 90s
when it was a stop for my "Hog Chapter" Sunday Rides
It's a small bar right off Coast Hwy.

Does that mean it's a cool place ATP

Jeff btd

It's a surf bar & will fill up fast with an audience
small stage area surrounded by tables & a pool table in the back
certainly would not mind seeing the "BH" in a small venue

I would not call it a cool place, though
pretty typical of the beach areas.

Come on Jeff! A bunch of us used to see them regularly at the Lava Lounge. Plus they headlined Tiki Oasis a few years back. It wasn't THAT long ago was it???

Who is this bunch of us?
All the old school tiki peeps from 90s n early 2000s.?
How many of them are still here on TC?
Lots of newbies to be schooled.
Now I sound like ATP

No schooling needed here......I'm an old-timer who used to see them at Lava Lounge.....

RL

Seeing the Blue Hawaiians at Lava Lounge is one of the things Julia and I discovered we had in common after we got together. It is yet another instance where we have figured out we might have seen each other before we formally met.

I have seen them (twice I think) at tiki oasis in San Diego and really enjoy their music. This was my introduction to them.

Their type of music appealed to me way before tiki art, drinks and culture ever did. I was into this type of music (surfy-ish instrumental) before being introduced to the "tiki scene" but it took a tiki event to introduce me to this band.

So my questions regarding the larger observation of the early tiki revival folks/ scene are:

Was the tiki scene (events, gatherings, makeup of the community) of the 90s and early 00's mostly a LA/OC scene? (If this was already discussed on TC somewhere then it is cool if you hate me for asking :) )

Did the Blue Hawaiians tour? Would anybody have had the chance to see them outside of LA/OC or tiki O?

I realize this is posted in California Events so the audience is Californians but I was just curious. I hope my questions don't derail this thread too much and are somewhat related and constructive.

Cheers,
SK

And Tiki-Ti at 4pm ??

Maybe after!

Sofa King - The Blue Hawaiians toured extensively. They were on a major label and had pretty good success through the '90s...
Their steel/ rhythm guitarist is playing with us tonight (Friday 6/28) at Don the Beachcoomber!

SK

Thanks for the info Spike!

That is super cool and I appreciate it.
Unfortunately I won’t be able to make their shows or yours tonight :(

Have fun tonight I’m sure it will be a great time and wish I could be there!

SK

I did not know that the Blue Hawaiians toured extensively.
I know they went out of town once in awhile.
But they usually played once a week at the Lava Lounge in Hollywood
For 10 or more years.

Jeff btd

Today people!
Go early, get a good parking spot,
Get a good table, have some great food from
The farmers market!

Jeff btd

They did at least a nation wide tour with Big Bad VooDoo Daddy in the '90s. That is, unless Gary was lying to me. Hahaha...

Gumbo Pot!

I'm a big fan of the Brazilian BBQ,
But you really can't go wrong with anything there.

Jeff btd

Buuuuuurp.
I ate about 3 lbs of meat at the Brazillian BBQ joint.

Show was awesome tonight.
Few surf fans,
Few tiki peeps,
Some long time fans of theirs.
But lots of general public.

Jeff btd

Super cool!

Totally Awesome show tonight.
Crowd wasn't too bad,
All the seats were full,
But it wasn't assholes to elbows like the April show.

Hope Tom took some good pics,
My cell phone pics look crappy.

Jeff btd

Agreed, tonight was an awesome show. If you missed it, shame on you. But they're playing again on the last Friday of September, so mark your calendar now. It's criminal in the best possible way that I have the opportunity to sit 20 feet away from The Blue Hawaiians and hear them play. Don't take it for granted...

Speaking of crappy cell phone pictures:

TT

Awesome one of a kind show last night!
KEV - Those pics ain't too shabby, definitely caught the mood.
I might bring my camera next month, I figured it was gonna be packed, and I didn't wanna have to deal.
Peeps, don't miss out, go next month ... or don't and make it more comfortable for us.

Tom, n Kevin,
You guys are tiki peeps that get it.
Glad to see ya there last night.

Jeff btd

What a fantastic show. We showed up super early, afraid that it was going to be sold out, but ended up watching the sound check and buying the band drinks, which was great. The show transported me back to Oasis 2009 (?) when they played and played and played - one of the best gigs I've ever seen, for sure. Three Clubs night was slightly marred at the end for us as bouncers adversely reacted to husband wolf-whistling with (apparently far too) much enthusiasm for an encore and he ended up being dragged out the club by his ankles. But it all adds to the story in retrospect. Great night!

Coming up next week.

Tonight in Laguna Beach!

J

Again... This Friday, Sept 27th...

Thanks for reminder John O

Tonight

Great show last night!
Here's the list that was split into two sets (I swear they played more songs), and they even did an encore.
The Blue Hawaiians said they'll have somethin' special goin' on for next months show ... so, be there!
I even took a few snaps this time.

Another great show by The Blue Hawaiians? Yep. Like crazy good. DICK! TRACY!

Some photos from the back row:

The camera moved, but somehow it seemed fitting based on what I was hearing from that guitar.

Higher resolution versions up on Flickr.

Kevin

Thanks for the pics guys, fun show.
I don't know all of the extra songs, but the last one was Jack the Ripper.

Jeff btd

Back again tonight.
And if I recall correctly they said dress up in a costume.

Jeff btd

So Jeff, what or who are you going to dress up as?

Just to clarify ...the location tonight is 214 Ocean Ave.Laguna Beach ?

RD

Its the 3 Club on 1123 Vine Street in Hollywood
