Another winner from NPR's (National Public Radio) This American Life (TAL) show. --- In this episode Jon Langford (The Mekons) uses the classified ads section of the Chicago Reader to assemble a band of musicians who had never met, and to have the band rehearse and cut a song together -- a cover of "Rocket Man" -- all in one day. This is great kinda funny but long, so if you want to just hear the song go to part two at the end. I do my own cover songs.... Here is one I did of a Rick James tune....and the kicker is, I was hugely, sickeningly drunk when I recorded it. I know, I know, I can't sing...but I still think it is hilarious...and I played all the instruments...no samples, etc....so at least there is that! (It's better with headphones) https://soundcloud.com/lucas-vigor/69-times?in=lucas-vigor/sets/set-3 And since I really do have mental health issues (as was pointed out to me here, recently) I love obscure 70's movies, like the Bad News Bears in Breaking Training....ok, I admit I am totally obsessed with the movie even going as far as mapping out all the filming locations and then visiting them...to see if I can feel the vibes from that san fernando valley goodness...I stand there hoping Kelly Leak will drive by...seeing how he is from Van Nuys and "Born to drive", it could happen, right? The only place I have not visited (YET) is the field in texas where the Texas Toros trained..... anyway, if you were those kid's age when the movies were filmed (as I was) then you might understand the movies better...if not, you are deeply disturbed by how un PC they were, back in the day....but that's how I remembered things.... Ok, so this song I also recorded very drunk...also as a joke...the original song is universally panned by critics on amazon and the IMSLB because it is cheesy 70's dross based on the 1812 overture....fuck. https://soundcloud.com/lucas-vigor/lookin-good-theme-from-the-bad?in=lucas-vigor/sets/set-3 But it isn't all bullshit with me....pretty much all the songs i record are cover versions.. I am very much a hack on the piano...but I love this song a lot, and usually it is not at such a fast pace: https://soundcloud.com/lucas-vigor/artist-so-daco-samba Now, do any of you really believe a sociopath could love Brazilian music? Ted Bundy, The Green River Killer, John Wayne Gacy....all of them were big fans of Jimmy Buffett.......I think that's pretty much a known fact by now. http://soundcloud.com/lucas-vigor/sets/set-3/ I AM A SOCIOPATH! Joey Defrancesco trio doing "Volare" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=957Yr3TdJXg I got to meet Joey at a NAMM show a few years ago, he was in the Hammond organ booth...normally, he is a jazz artist....and I started talking to him about the capitol records ultra lounge series release "Organs in orbit"....and he started playing songs from it, in that style right in front of me...I was floored and I begged him right there and then to do a lounge jazz album in the style of people such as Jackie davis.......he said he might one day! Joey, if you ever read this.....remember this idea! http://soundcloud.com/lucas-vigor/sets/set-3/ I AM A SOCIOPATH! [ Edited by: lucas vigor 2014-03-14 13:01 ] |

The organs in orbit CD is probably my favorite one in that series, along with "space capades"... When Joey D was in that booth (and this was a few years ago of course) he was playing a fully digital version made by Hammond, but it was hooked up to a Leslie....as far as I am concerned, and with the eyes closed...it looked and sounded exactly the same as a real tonewheel organ. he was even able to do some of those waterfall effects...and a lot of the typical 50's/60's sci-fi sound effects on that thing..... Out of the Organs in orbit Cd, my favorite track is "Love is just around the corner" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnSWtd-pvUE It's hard to find his stuff...I wish capital would re-release ALL the full source albums for the ultra lounge series....I have one CD of his that has 3 albums in one, but this track is not on it. Most of the tracks are mono. All his songs are cool cover versions..... And speaking of mono, I wish the original, stereo david rose album would be released. This song is one of my favorites, but I have a David Rose CD that has a mono, earlier version of it: Gay Spirits: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oT4pXNacMA From the beginning to the end, this song has so many twists and turns and is very richly arranged...I always picture old aerial views of 50's era hollywood when I hear it.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oT4pXNacMA Love to see someone try and do a cover of THAT tune! These women are covering their own song! K-On! Let's Go! concert, Yokohama, 30th December 2009. The women are the seiyuu (voice actresses) for the anime K-On! in their roles as Hokago Tea Time band. The song is basic although pleasant in a bubblegum sort of way and the level of musicianship not very good. What is interesting is that they had never played a musical instrument until a month or two before the concert which was held as their way of saying farewell to their fans at the conclusion of the series. So. Each actress had to take a crash course. For only a small portion of the concert, there was a backing band behind a scrim for the solo songs. Otherwise, everything was live; performed by the women. No pre-recorded soundtrack. There were several costume changes keeping in line with the characters which accounts for the strange outfits. The lengthy discussion before the song begins is reenactment from an episode of the show. Hikasa Yoko portrays the character Akiyama Mio on bass. Yoko is right-handed. Also of interest: Note musical instruments, amps and head units. Same as characters in HTT. Significant moments 2:55 through 7:21. http://m.facedl.com/fvideo=akuxkniqkaaooan [ Edited by: Veronica! 2016-02-08 13:48 ] |
