Hello all, Just wanted to share some very recent finds at our local TjMax. Without opening the whole "tiki going mainstream" arguement, my wife (who works at our local TJMax) found these really nice glass "bottles" in the backroom before they went out to the general public. The Suffering Bastard bottle is very well done as is the Moai. In addition to the Blue Hawaii and Margaritta Mix, there is also a Strawberrry Daqauri mix. All of the mixes are available in either the SB or Moai. By far, the Blue Hawaii mix looks the best in the bottles. So, keep an eye out or if you do not have a local TJMax, let us know and we can arrange to hook you up! |

Mainstream schmainstream! I'm GETTIN' 'em! Tikisobayli, have you tasted either yet? (I'm assuming being at TJ Maxx, the cost is not prohibitive, so even if they suck, it will not be a wasted expenditure) |

The mix is still not out in our store here in Alabama. But more then likely should be in the next day or so. They were $9.99 each so they were on the expensive side for sure. As far as who makes them, the tag on the bottle has the brand name on Being while the foil wrapper around the cap has the name Shoneeld's. I have never heard of either. We have not tried them yet, but we are having a tiki gathering next weekend for my wifes birthday and we might get into one if we get desperate for mix. Let us know if anyone else spots them around in their local stores. Again, the offer is still open about us getting some for any who wants one. Just send me a PM [ Edited by: tikisobayli on 2004-02-20 15:55 ] |

I stopped by my local TJ Maxx today, poked around the shelves and came up with nuthin'. Asking the salesperson didn't help either. So I went downstairs to another store called "Marshall's" (which is identical to TJ Maxx, but with a different name - same stock, same prices - go figure...), and after hunting through their housewares section, spotted one of the Suffering Bastard bottles peeking out from behind some larger bottles. Yesss! Was it filled with Blue Hawaiian mix? Nooooo... Was it filled with Daiquiri mix? Nope... Was it possibly filled with Margarita mix? Not this one... It was filled with DARK RED KIDNEY BEAN INFUSED OIL What the f*ck is that?? It's made by the same "Shonfeld's" as the drink mixes, so I guess they make all kinds of culinary stuff. I haven't the slightest idea what to do with the contents, so I may just dump it out. I did feel kinda dopey shelling out 10 bux for a bottle of DARK RED KIDNEY BEAN INFUSED OIL, but it does look kinda cool. Picture the blue Suffering Bastard from Tikisobayli's pic filled with DARK RED KIDNEY BEANS. Oh, and OIL. So I left with my Suffering Bastard and headed straight over to "ROSS Dress For Less" (which is the identical triplet to TJ Maxx and Marshall's) and found a whole range of "Shonfeld's" products in assorted cool bottles. Alas, no tikis, but I'll bet they either had them or will have them at some point. So keep checkin' your TJ Maxx's, but also try Marshall's and Ross - these thing's could be anywhere!! Oh, and if you have any clue as to what to use DARK RED KIDNEY BEAN INFUSED OIL for, let me know... |

Doctor Z~ After you finally end up dumping the kidney bean & oil (hec, you know you'll end up doing that), clean the inside as best as you can and put distilled water and a mixture of food coloring (remember, red + blue make purple!!) and fill 'the bastard' with the colored water. That's what I did with my vintage barber bottles in my bathroom. Remember to fill it to the very top and leave as little air in it as possible. I've had mine filled for 4 years with no problems or color change whatsoever. Place a low watt light behind it and light it up! Plus, if you get bored with the same color, just make another color mixture! During Christmas you can make a light colored mixture (or just distilled H2O) with colorful glitter and you'll have yourself a Holiday Bastard Snow 'globe'! Just my 2 coconuts worth. Went to TJMaxx TEMPLE CITY (after calling the two South bay stores and getting a "Huh?" respectively an ON HOLD FOREVER reaction). What a strange store. Discount fashions and decor art. All those noveaux tropical Tommy Bahama things with fake patina, yuk. Impressive faux banana palm, not cheap though. Found the bottles and asked if someone could get me a case of those (a nice gift for friends) but alas, apparently they do not have storage, just what's on the shelf. And they had only one each (blue/red/yellow) of the Suffering Bastard design, so I got'em all, and two Moais. The Strawberry Daiquiri mix is best in my opinion (visually, don't think I'll ever try the stuff) like clear red food dye No 1 (or so). The S.B. now sits in front of a light bulb which makes it glow like the Jewel of the Nile. The clearness of the liquid makes all the glass lines come out, even the red Moai looks good. Heavy glass, too. Thanks tikisobayli for that tip, T.C. comes through again! Drove by the Outrigger and Kona Kai Apts which looked good, but checking up on the EXOTIC ISLE (BOT p.220) in Alhambra was so sad. It is now called "Jade Garden" and is totally de-forested and de-Tikied. That place was as dense with tropical foliage as Disney's jungle cruise. Now Mexican style slash and burn gardening has only left stumps. Granted, they kept the waterfalls going which are the most amazing lava rock sculptures anywhere. The first by the entrance is at least eight, the one in the front courtyard is easily ten foot high, and then there is the lava bridge extending from under the flying rec room. Now all the waterways have rod iron fencing around them (the result of litigation paranoia), and the flying rec room's outrigger beams have been sawed off (typical ritual emasculation process), even the irregularly undulating beachcomber style floorboard edges (note in small photo on bottom of page 220) are straightened (god forbid any individualistic detailing would be left!). One massacred Tiki is still lying under some stairs, cut in half through the face, too wasted to be rescued. Someone give him a proper burial, please! I regret having had such little space to show off that urban island in the BOT, I have more than 20 slides from it. I plan to show some memorial images at Denny's show at Tiki Taix, ....R.I.P. EXOTIC ISLE! |

Wait a minute. Did "Tiki People" not complain about a year ago saying that tiki is selling out in major department stores and were all freaked out about it??? I'm glad some of you have "come out" and accepted it. ( I have a deal coming up with WallMart that is going to blow your minds!) (just joking! Arrrrrrr!!!) But, the fact remains there's a lot of bitching about tiki going mainstream. Face it man! Tiki is everywhere and don't hesitate to pick it up wherever you see it! Tiki is cool and will always be cool! No matter what! |

Sven, I'm sorry to hear about Exotic Isle, another one bites the dust. Amen Ben!!!! But, imagine my surprise that Dr. Z has found a supplier for Dark Red Kidney Bean Infused Oil. I love the stuff, can't get enough of it. I pour it on my Wheaties every morning. I use it as a restorative ointment. It's a fantastic substitute for Viagra. Doubles as a scalp treatment, spot remover and medicinal tincture. My favorite use however is The Dark Red Kidney Bean Infused Oil Daiquiri... The Dark Red Kidney Bean Infused Oil Daiquiri. Baltimore TC'ers can find them @ the Marshall's in Towson Marketplace. The TJ Maxx just has a staff that laughs at you as they walk away. There should be a few there, only took one of each(Thinking of my Local TC Ohana). The Kindney Bean ones are there as well. Who would want them is beyond me. I warnwed the staff that there are more than a few people in the area that would be in for some. [ Edited by: Turbogod on 2004-02-21 08:13 ] |

I scored one of each today at Marshalls. The moai head is full of "Black Bean infused oil" and the mai tai joe/sufferin bastard is full of "mixed bean infused oil". $10.00 each. I think its funny that the tag says "This product is an Exclusive design of Shonfeld's USA". Think trader vics would disagree? Anyway, I'm happy I got them. Now...gotta figure out what to put in them. Erich |

Marshall's on E Colonial and Bumby in Orlando has a bunch of 'em. Maybe 15-20, of which about half were drink mixes and the other half were oils. I got a Blue Hawaiian SB and a black bean infused oil Moai (cuz it was the best looking one). They did NOT have the Wee Tiki drink set though, which was mighty disappointing. I'll have to find a TJ Maxx tomorrow. I'd just like to add that I'm sipping an authentic Harry Yee Blue Hawaii (recipe lifted from this forum) as I type this. I don't think I'll be using that Shonfeld's mix. I'm glad I caught these since I missed the cookie jar. Another tiki item I found at a discount clothing store is an Akademiks tiki shirt that I purchased last August (before I found TC) at a Burlington Coat Factory Outlet. Here are a couple pics from my crappy ass digital camera: You see the hula girl that's like print screened. The white embroidery is of orchids and hula girls. The brown embroidery is a Hawaiian tiki. The back has a large embroidered tiki. It's a cool shirt and was only $20-25. Dunno if there are any more as I got it back in August. |

Hello all... They have the same little plate as Alnshely's but there were two small Marquesan glasses: They are 3 1/2" tall and are unmarked. I also saw the Suffrin' Blue Hawaii mix at TJMaxx. Picked one up. Thinking about giving it a good coat with Fleckstone... |

I did the TJ Maxx tour here in Houston. Houstonians: So who got the 2 SB's that were there yesterday but not today: 1 with margarita mix and 1 with a bubble defect in the nose, filled with blue Hawaiian mix? Or are there non-TC Houstonians who recognize a cool bottle when they see it? Maybe mainstream-ization ain't all bad! Blue Hawaiian, Mai Tai and Strawberry Daq mixes... Hey guys....glad everyone is finding these! I am the one who works there so I just thought I'd let everyone know that Marshall's, TJ Maxx, and Homegoods are all owned by the same company so you should be able to find similar things at any. I know our store only got about a dozen of them as of now. Imagine how excited I was after a long shift...I was taking out the garbage cause the custodian hadn't shown up that night and there on the backroom shelf......it made my night! We haven't had any of the oils yet and I haven't seen the little mug sets, but lately we have been getting lots of those little sets with flavored cosmopolitan sugars and whatnot. I am hoping we will get some in! Anyway, hope everyone is enjoying theirs! waikiki |
