Wow, that's insane that ice is so expensive in other areas. Gas stations are usually $1.99 for 10 lb bags around me. |

Ok, here is why I wont buy Ice at gas stations or etc. I directly know many people that worked for or owned Ice companies. You would be hard pressed to find someone that has worked in that industry that will use the ice made at those locations for food or drink. I'll save you the details but many of them are less then sanitary. The worst stories come from Home Ice which is big east of the Mississippi. |

That's a good point. I've seen how gross and moldy those things can become on restaurant rehab shows but how can you be sure Sonic is regularly cleaning their machines? As I posted earlier in this thread, the closest Sonic to me that will even sell ice is over 30 minutes away so I've never tasted or tested it against what I'm normally using to determine if it's "cleaner." |

Couple things come to mind:
I did decide to buy a KitchenAid 50lb capacity ice maker for my bar and it rocks both for convenience and for time savings. (I paid half price, it supposedly has a scratch or dent, but I've never been able to find it.) I don't run it continuously, which is both good and bad, but I watch my ice like a hawk and don't have any problems. The machine is FAST and saves me the hassle of buying ice. I love it. |

Aloha!! ICE !! :) I think it’s actually one of those things many people don’t think about, but, in making cocktails, sometimes very important. So, a Sonic opened by me recently and I figured I would try it out.. I have read over the thread and do understand some of the different viewpoints. I figured it was worth bumping this during this very busy holiday time....when you might not have a lot of time to crush ice....it is a huge time saver if there is a Sonic near you to pull in a drive through and get some very nice sized nugget ice. It is $3 for 10lbs here in SoCal, but, sometimes, convenience is worth it. In regards to the cleanliness....I have looked and smelled the ice every time before using....and it seems very clean :) Cheers!! :drink: |

I would say most of us take ice into serious consideration; it’s one of the most important elements in a tiki cocktail. That pellet ice is good for filling a glass & straining a shaken drink over it. It’s not so good for shaking or blending with, it tends to turn mushy. I also feel like it melts quicker than crushed, but that’s not a problem if you drink it quick! Mele Kalikimaka! |

Aloha! Sonic Drive In does have amazing ice. Hailing from the great state of Oklahoma originally I know this to be true. I take great care as to not have my special cocktails get diluted too soon. I will stash a bag of it in my freezer soon. Cheers :drink: Mele Kalikimaka! |
