Thank you all for the congratulations.

Humuhumu Darlin' I do hope you can make it! It'd be wonderful if your Schmama could stay another day and be a part of the Mai Tai brigade. And I'd love to meet her.

My car and the Tiki Central participants will actually be the kick-off participants in the parade - so we go the 5 blocks and then we get to sit and watch the whole thing go by... Plus, there is an after-party at the Pub and TikiGardener's shindig - which I absolutely will be attending by the way.
So much for a Schmama to enjoy...

Do you need us to bring pot-luck dishes TG?

P.S.
I told the parade organizers that there is a rivalry between us and those Parrotheads - They won't know what's coming when they march by TIKI Centalites... I warned about 'shaking of fists...'

oh oh ooooh....

does anyone have a large ghetto blaster i could borrow? i plan on blasting my Ape "Jungle Gems" CD as I roll down the route. I consider it to be "good (actually best) music to royal wave by."

I will be riding in the "Thirsting Haoles" Mobile. I do believe that C.B. could use some assisitance temporary tiki-fying it if anyone is willing?

Potluck dishes would be fine!

A folding table or two would be great, other wise the food goes directly on the patio!

TG

C.B here! Yes I'm actually posting... what a rarity. Anyway, yes. Tina & I could definitely use some suggestions and some "on hands" help decorating the "Thirsting Haolies Mobile".

Any ideas, thoughts, hallucinations?

Hey C.B.,

Ask Ms Capri for my friend Mitch's contact info. He was offering the use of his Cadillac and Cadillac trailer. But he also said if there were any float decoration needs, he'd be willing to help out.

Oh anybody planning on stopping by the patio party should bring their own mugs. I have a few plastic ones I'm willing to let enter the fray.

And I do need some kind of idea of the numbers of possible attendees. My patio might be able to hold about 20-30 people.

But there are two hallways that look right down onto it, so you could have some "balcony" seating.

I wanted to have a link to take you directly to my PayPal page for the $10.00 Doo Dah fee, but I can't seem to get it to work. Instead you can just PayPal it to [email protected].

Well, I can safely say that I won't be walking in the parade. How can I say that?
Well I managed to fracture one bone in my big toe in THREE PLACES.

I go to the orthopedic surgeon tomorrow to see what the prognosis is. I might need surgery, or a cast.

But I'm hoping that I'll be up to having whoever wants to show up as guests on the patio. Some Sy Zentner and Tiki Gardens slides might take my mind off of my foot.

TG

[ Edited by: tikigardener on 2004-11-12 21:11 ]

Ouch TG! How did you manage to do that? I hope it heals quickly.

I received our participant's info packet from the Doo Dah.

TIME:
Meet no later than 10:30 AM.

FORMATION AREA:
The formation area is in Memorial Park in Old Pasadena. It is located on Raymond Avenue between Walnut and Holly. It's 2 blocks north of Colorado Blvd. Be sure to get there early so you don't get caught in traffic when the crowds arrive.

Remember, our unit is first in the parade because we're with Queen Cherry. It has been suggested that each group bring some kind of flag that can be easily found in the formation process. Bax has a lovely little sail that would work nicely, but I wonder if we will need it if we know we are at the head of the line.

MEDIA:
Reporters from TV and newspapers will be roaming the staging area. Last year the parade was featured on all evening news and three early morning network news programs, CNN and some other international outlets. That's another reason for you to get there early, oh hammy ones.

PARKING:

They suggest that you drop off any sound equipment, floats, props with group members in Memorial Park before parking your car.

Free parking above Walnut Street, north of the staging area. Other parking is available on the streets and in parking structues throughout the vicinity.

ROUTE:
The parade begins at Holly and Raymond, proceeds South on Raymond, then West on Colorado.

I was wrestling with one of those barrier poles that disappear into the ground. You know, the kind that are in front of areas that are sometimes used as pedestrian only?

Well the ones at my work have a flat rectangular cap on the top of them. This is to give us something to pull them up by when they've been lowered into the ground.

Well the one I was fighting with got out of alignment and jammed. So I went to reposition myself to get a good grip, and stance to be able to safely make it go down.

Well before I was throughrepositioning, it suddenly dropped. And I would have been ok, but the pole spun as it went down. so the plate cap would have missed me if it had gone down without spinning. But it did spin, and didn't miss my foot.

Or rather my big toe. Thankfully my new Doc Martins weren't broken in so the leather was very stiff. Unfortunately they weren't steel toe. If they had been broken in, my toe would have been powder.

As it is, they now tell me it is fractured in FOUR PLACES. Three fractures run the lenght of the toe. One on each side, and one down the middle. The fourth runs across the middle of the bone. So it looks like an H with an extra line down the middle. I think it is in 6 pieces.

Needles to say I'm in a dull agony. I really almost stopped by Tiki Ti on the way home from the emergency room. But alcohol makes your blood thin, thereby making bruises WORSE.

That and the look my wife gave me said it wasn't going to happen.

Sorry Tina
The Dog has run out of time and energy.
We as a family will come to cheer you on.
But work, family, and the fact that I am getting old have takin the wind out of my sails.
We are very proud of Miss Capri and all those who are participating.

See you there

Ditto.

P.S. Wouldn't want to "take away" any of the fame with my Bamboo Suit. Or, I can't do this cause it will tarnish my "bad boy of tiki" charm. LOL!!!

I hear the real reason Bax & Ben aren't participating with us is they're already committed to marching with the parrotheads.......

BWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!!

Five yard penalty, Insinuating Buffet Envy, Loss of down.

Low blow... But if it gets them to march, it was worth it.

I tell ya what, I'm sitting here with a toe bone in six pieces, and I just got down with a root canal. I'll commit to marching (or hobbling ) if they do.

So are ya gonna be one upped by a cripple Ben?

A freaky "Tiny Tim" cripple at that.

Huh Ben, Huh!?!

TG

For those of you who don't usually venture into the Creating Tiki forum, Pup has been posting pictures of his Mai Taicycles as he has been decorating:

http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=11820&forum=7&6

I was hoping to be able to march in my first Doo-Dah in 15 years, but it looks like I won't be able to: I'm spending this next weekend going through my storage space looking for missing clothing & camping gear that I'll be needing over the next month. Unfortunately this weekend is my only chance to be able to do this. :(

TikiHai Steve has offered to pull somebody in his rickshaw!!!

Cherry has told me she's still in need of a ghetto blaster for the Ape soundtrack...

T-Pup and Tiny Tim (aka TG),
A month ago I built a bar and 2 shadow boxes (to house 2 1920's vintage hula skirts)for, "their leader" who is having a private Super Bowl party for one of the teams. The Horror! the Horror!!

You know what's strange, I sell more tiki bars to Parrot Head$ than I sell to Tiki Heads (like 20 to 1). Hmmmmmmmm.

Anyway, I'm on a mission Saturday to get "Raiders Signitures" for my very sick and laid out brother in law cause that's "his team." Hince the work and family ditto in an above post.

Y'al have fun marching !!!

Hey Tiny(akaT.G.), Are you gonna be able to wear the Beatle Boots anymore??? Don't worry about the root canals, they get easier after a few.

P.S. Bax is on his own!!!

I'll be wearin Beatle boots when I die...

If I have to have corrective surgery so I can deform my feet with impractical shoes, damn it, I will!!!

Root canals have never been painful for me. Its the PTS. Post Traumatic Stress. When I was 5 I snapped off two teeth. The dentists didn't use enough novacaine. So every time I sit in that chair, I go back instantly to the bright light, pain so bad I gotta puke place.

But given the amount of pain I was in on friday, even if the root canal had hurt, it would have been a cake walk.

Shame Ya aint gonna be there.

Speaking of which, exactly who all is going to be there?

TG

Congrats to Cherry Capri. My husband and I plan on attending and we are bringing our dog, MUGSY TIKI. Check him out. Yes he will be wearing that outfit of course See ya there. Aloha.

Oh, come on dress it up like a Parrot ?
It's so cute!

Ah, my first visit to Pasadena since "Santacon." I get the sense that it is probably unusual to associate Pasadena with extreme displays of eccentricity, but hey.

Is there an official "TC Cheering Section" locale established? If not, anyone wanna designate one?

Is the party still on at TG's? Because if so I'd love to drop by, with two friends. We will bring out own mugs and hopefully have a chance to grab some chips and/or snacks somewhere...

I hope Humuhumu can make it, if not Schmama Lama too!!! Humu, you mentioned a carpool--how do you feel about that now? We'd have room for at least one more--two small people, in fact! :)

meow,

tikivixen

H

I am definitely going to be there, bright & early, and will be proud to march alongside our darling Cherry Capri!

Tikivixen, Schmama Lama flies out that morning, so she won't be joining us. I'm going to be driving up from Anaheim (Disneyland!) that morning, and getting to the parade setup area super-early, so I don't need a ride... thanks for the offer, though, and I'm so glad you'll be there! Re: the cheering section, will you be getting there early enough that you can march in the parade with us?

My doors are still open.

On a stroke of luck/nostalgia, I saw a lost our lease sign on the wonderful Cal-Oaks Pharmacy here in Pasadena. So wanting to be able to say I set foot in it once, I went off my normal route.

And got three bottles of Trader Vic's Mai Tai mix. Which I haven't been able to find in Pasadena. Shame the building from 1962 might not be there much longer...

I'll post more in a bit.

Re: Cal-Oaks Pharmacy...oh no, that isn't the lovely pink one with great old neon across from Monty's Steakhouse, is it?!?

I sure hope not. Sigh.

Humu dear, Bill is sick and I am just getting over extremely sick. Sat. night we'll staying in the high desert, up in Pioneertown (to catch a seedy, noirish, fabulous Stan Ridgway show.) I fear Paul will be the only one in our party able to crawl out of bed early enough to make it down to Pasadena by 10:30. Otherwise, I would love to march in the parade. But I know we just won't have the vim. Or the vigor either.

Come to think of it, Paul never gets up early anyway :).

But we will cheer you all on like mad!

See y'all soon!! xox tikivixen

Yup that Cal Oaks. I don't know what its fate is, but given the amount of developement in Pasadena, it will probably be destined to become a condo complex.

tg

I am going to try to make it to make it to the parade and would love to attend the after party. I will be cheering on Tiki Central. Tiki Gardener anything specific for BYOB/pot luck that you need? Oh, and Laney should know that last year (this was hard to explain to my daughter) the "Viagra Marching Team" demonstrated the success of their medication with some sort of inflatable gadget under their hospital robes.

if anyone else is up at this hour. i am going to be on KNX again around 8:30 AM and will mention the tiki central marching team!!!

Well, I did not have the opportunity to mention Trader Pup's MaiTaiCycles - which I was planning to - cause they were running late on the news... BUT I did get to mention Cynful's giant Trader Vic's Tiki Mug!!! woo hoo!

Oh no, this was what I was curious about... but we'll still be there. Haven't committed to marching.
How many will march?
If I decide to, can I pay in cash????

I have a boom box but it's small and probably not too loud. But I can bring it as well as plastic tiki cups. I have tons of aloha wear if anyone needs to borrow a muumuu or something. I saw tiki torches at 99 cent store. Do we need some of those???

I was at a cheesy swap meet and picked up dozens of shell leis (they were $1 a dozen), but when I got home I could barely fit one over my head. So they'd be perfect for kids in the crowd, I'll bring those too, if you want. I read we aren't supposed to throw stuff so we'd have to hand them out.

Tikifille, can't wait to finally talk to you, you are my woman hero.

Aw, Cherry I missed you on KNX.

Here is some more Parade info provided by the Doo Dah website:

DIRECTIONS:

FROM 210 FWY: Exit at Fair Oaks/Marengo off ramp. Proceed south on Fair Oaks to Colorado (approx. 1/4 mile), which is the heart of the parade route and look for convenient parking.

I called the Doo Dah office to find out when the streets will be closed and they informed me that the streets along the parade route (including Colorado itself) will be open until about 10:00 AM.

You can give your $10.00 to me the morning of the parade in case you weren't able to Paypal-it. Being the "Contact Person" I am supposed to check in the group, pay any remaining entry fees and pick up the entry stickers that we are all supposed to wear.

Or a Gap...

Given that the area is a low population density area, I can't see a commercial use of it.

But I can see them trying to get people to live in the area, and then tearing other stuff down to put in commercial space.

Oh if someone has a cooler, it would come in handy for the ice.

As far as what booze to bring, I'd say either bring some beer ( not so tiki I know, but very surfer ), or try and bring the ingredients to your fave drink.

I'm going to try and procure a coctail shaker.

I'll give Tina my contact info, and then hook up with the crew at the parade, after the marching has occured. My building has a code for the door, which I will give to Tina also. So try and stick together!

If there are any additional attendees, please contact me. I'd like to get a handle on how many people will be stopping by.

Still in the air is that slide projector...

well, I've got the Witco rolling...

But it looks like rain...I hope it dosen't rain on our parade!

What do I need to bring? Planning on bringing the float, necklaces to give away a few plastic tiki cups, some type of booze, a few extra crazy hats for people to wear.

Do I NEED to bring chairs, the boom box (someone would need to buy 8 size C batteries, I don't have them)anything else?

Does anyone know how long the route is???
I've worked til bar close the past few nights, and gotten up early too. just want to prepare myself. Yipes

It looks like rain, but the forecast doesn't seem to predict it.

The parade route is short, but the actual length of the parade depends on the number of participants. It can last quite awhile.

I've given Tina my phone number. If you want to drop off any party supplies before the parade begins, contact her or PM me.

As far as chairs go, maybe a couple. We have three lounge chairs, and four chairs and a table on our patio. Given that attendance looks to be about 8 to a dozen, I think we're ok.

That said, if thirty people show up who didn't get in contact with me, well then the supplies and booze might not last for long, nor will my wits.

As far as food, chips dip, or whatever you're willing to bring.

I'm diggin out my surf cds ( few ) and some other exotica/crooner ala Sinatra stuff. If you have a fave exotica cd bring it along.

TG

Well Aloha - it is raining now here at my home, but have no fear - rain or shine - doo dah show has always gone on through rain before and actually - the forecast says it should clear up by tomorrow.

but maybe bring an umbrella just in case. - think of it as hukilau or mondo lounge parts II - both events had some rain - but we know that everyone who made it to those events had a great time - the tiki spirit will not be foiled!!!

laney, please do bring your blaster - i will bring batteries. the route is 5-6 blocks - so not very long at all...
oh - fun hats sound good - i will bring some extra tiki shakers in case anyone wants to shake along to the Ape CD?

i have been invited to the "official seating area" for doo dah - and can bring 9-10 guests along... (and can probably sneak more in) so that just about covers everyone who has said they will be marching. so non-marchers please try and find a spot near us if you can?

the address is 64 north raymond - i believe it is near the beginning of the parade route - so we'll march the parade and then head back towards the beginning area.

marchers - we have been talking about a coordinated drink from our tiki mugs followed by a unison shaka sign! so bring your mugs for marching - and also for tiki gardeners later...

tiki gardener, i hope you can drum up a slide projector - cause seeing those slides would be a royal treat!

last, but not least - our very own hukilau brown is gonna be my chauffer on the haole mobile!

No one has come forward with a projector yet.

But I have covered the cushions for the lounge chairs with a drop cloth so they hopefully won't be damp tomorrow.

While my patio garden likes the rain, lets hope it will stop soon.

well, just got home from work and it was POURING I got soaked just picking up my son. Luckily I covered my Witco float (I assembled it outside) with a tarp before I left for work. I hope no damage was done, aside from the few holes I drilled in the bottom.
If there's the slightest bit of rain, I don't think I'm marchin. I don't want to pull my stool in the rain, or even want to load it in my little car. I had planed on putting the top down and hopefully it would slide into the back seat. I don't want to chance it in the truck.
Damn Rain!

We will be there with the radio to cheer! See ya soon!

The rain is gone!!! yah!

Well, what a day!!! The Queen of The Doo Dah Parade has just left the building! I'd like to thank everyone for stopping by. And for such a slap dash affair, I'd say it turned out quite well.

The surprise visit by Count Smokula made the evening, accordian music and tikis!

Ok, I have to run and get the place ship shape.

But again, the tiki central folks looked great, and the party goers were the best...
particularly given that my place is so small! I'm sure you'll see the pictures soon enough...

Rebecca and I had so much fun pulling our tiki that we can't wait a whole year to pull it again. The thrill of pulling our tiki in front of thousands of screaming fans is one of the memories we shall treasure always. Plus, it was REALLY NICE of TikiGardener to have us all over to his apartment afterward to bask in the glory of Do Dah Parade Queen Cheri Capri and her entourage. Also, thanks to Tina for encouraging Rebecca and me to let our freak flag fly!

L

Wow! That really was fun! My son Nick who didn't even want to go, had so much fun, he can't wait til next year! He really got a kick out of watching peoples reactions to King Kukulele's rubber band uke, and throwing out matches to all the kids.

I did manage to catch the Queen, a few of us and a close up of our groups dog, MUGSY TIKI on the 11:00 news ch.7 last night.

Speaking of MUGSY TIKI, how is his tummy? I saw towards the end of the parade, him turning down hot dogs with a pained face.
I also saw on the news bit, "The Grill Team" with their hot dog shooter. So that's where they came from.

Thanks also to Tina for being our leader, Dave & Tony for getting up and getting the pizza and Tiki Gardner for having us after (your wife is so talented and interesting)

I think we did a bang-up job for a last minute thing. Next year will be even better! I'm ready, I'm ready....

Great pictures- it makes me even more sad that I was on the other side of the country for this event. On behalf of the rest of Tiki Central, though, I would like to thank those who represented us so well!

We had an incredible time participating in the parade....! The best was when the parrotheads came over to give us a pre-parade look over and to invite us to party with their group, and while checking out the mai-taicycles and commenting on how cool they were, one of them noticed the parrots hanging from the back: "Look! Parrots! You guys should join us for beer later! Wait! The parrots are hanging from a noose.... you hate parrotheads...!!" A few insulting remarks about Tikis & mai tais were uttered as they wandered back to their own side of the parade.....

Many thanks to everyone who helped make the day so much fun! Thanks Tina for getting our group organized, and thanks to Tiki Gardener for hosting the after party. Next year....

Krustiki and Ookoo Lady were there in the formation area to cheer us on and we got a surprise on Colorado Blvd. when we saw Baxdog, Kukui and their young 'uns. Well, I kept searching and I saw one young 'un, and I am assuming you brought the pair. It was cold out there, eh?

Let’s see, we had:

CB Howlie – Planning, shopping, decorating, car loaning and bongo playing.

Cynner – You traveled so far to bring us your Mai Tai! I have never seen a Mai Tai cavort and caper like that before. Thank you for your costume designing hints. That really helped me when I made ole Tiki Bob.

Dinah Flow – Thanks for hosting our car-decorating and sign making session. We were well prepared on parade morning because of it!

Also starring Hukilau Brown – as the Chaffeur. So handsome, So debonair. You don't come out to play with us nearly often enough.

Humu – You were glamorous as ever, uke in hand, seducing the crowd from a Tiki Hai’s rickshaw.

King Kukulele – that flying uke gets ‘em every time. People will fall for it, even if the gag was just played on someone else who is maybe 7 feet away. Maybe it happened with such lightning speed that they missed it the first time.

Laney and Nick – I'm glad that one of the surviving Krustiki photos captures your Witco float; I hope someone posts a close-up that includes the carefully arranged foliage. Nick sure didn’t seem like he wanted to get involved with any of this when he first arrived. I did see that big grin on his face during the parade.

Natalie – I was wondering how we were going to distribute all of those “Lotta Living” matchbooks. Then I saw you flinging them into the grabby crowd, handful after handful. That solved the issue and was entertaining to watch.

Pam – One who responded when the question was asked, “Who will fan the Queen with this giant banana leaf?” I hope you enjoyed your maiden TC voyage.

Purple Orchid Crew – Dave, Rebecca and Bob
Big tiki, big banana leaves and oh my gosh, that sound system. Thanks for putting us together with that great, big, loud and mobile sound system. It blasted Ape to the masses and we had a great sound track.

Tikilands and Mugsy Tiki – I hope you enjoyed yourselves and will come back for more TC fun. Mugsy is such a sweet doggie. Thanks for bearing the TC logo down the parade route, BTW.

Tiki Hai – You really came through with by providing us with props and your decorating skill for the Queen’s Cherry-ot.

Trader Pup and Tom – you guys were great with those Mai Taicycles. Hawaiian shirts, combat boots, Chinese hats covered with aloha fabric and finished with dingleberries and of course formal tails because they were after all, there with the Queen. Pup’s labors really enhanced our presentation. Pup also made the beautiful “Cherry Capri” sign that adorned the front of the Futura.

And of course, there’s Tiki Gardener. Your original post started it all. I understand that I missed a swell party due to my homeward retreat, but I am glad to hear that everybody made it up there and had a good time.

Like Laney said, we did pretty well considering that we didn't have a lot of time. Good going, TC!
