No More Hawaii Kodak Hula Show

The Times are a'changing indeed. The decades old Hawaii Kodak Hula Show ended yesterday in Honolulu. No sponser could be located for the show which has been running since the 1930's. See details at http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com Sept. 27/02.

I caught the show in January. It was in a big stadium and the turnout was rather large. To bad, it was a cool piece of old Waikiki.

That's a damn shame. I was really looking forward to going to the show next June. I have some old 8mm movies my dad took of the show in 1970 that I just transfered to video.

Thanks very much for the wonderful photo of the Kodak Hula Show. Now I feel really nostalgic.

Wow, that sucks. I was JUST in Hawaii, too. Well, at least the Polynesian Cultural Center is still around.

Wow, That is indeed a bummer. I was not aware. The Kodak Hula Show was one of those staples I personally thought would always an integral be part of tourist Waikiki. One of my prise possessions is a hula skirt from the 1950's Kodak Hula Show professionally framed in a shadow box. I purchased it when a local restaurant "Hamburger Hulas" changed venues. Bummer.

on the beach near Kaiulani Avenue, just before Sunset.

years ago i bought a photo album of an elderly couples trip to hawaii and the kodak hula show at garage sale(?)....in this album were not only pics of their entire trip but the original leis from when they got off the plane, pressed neatly in plastic between the pages....there are reciepts from where they stayed and ate as well. what's more, included in the box with the photo album are 2 super 8 reels of vacation footage in hawaii which I have yet to see what's on them...they are marked on the outside of the reel's as refering to their stay and the entire kodak hula show is supposedly on one of the reels.....i think by the time I picked this stuff up the couple were already deceased...the photos look to be from the 1960's, maybe early 70's. it's kinda spooky, cause the documentation is so detailed, it's more llike a vacation scrapbook......you can tell it really meant alot to these folks, whoever they are ( or were).........i've been meaning to get a projector so I can view the reels...probably some good shots of vintage hawaii, including interiors of hotels and bars perhaps....or then again, maybe it contains some porn they made while they were there......stay tuned...

Aloha it was nice to see so many people expressing their thoughts about the Kodak Hula Show. My Mother was a Kodak Hula Poster Girl, she danced in her youth & as a young adult back in the 50's & 60's, and then again as adult in the late 70's.
I used to love as a child to go and watch her and others in my family perform.

So from my family to all of yours Mahalo for your thoughts, it was a long run, over 60 yrs of Hula.

This is such a cool story. Thanks for sharing it. Wow, have times changed. In he 60's and 70's people saved everything from their trips. Well, maybe times haven't changed that much. :wink: Thanks again.

Actually, I dont think it does...SDT... Stuff like this from the Kodak Hula show point is PRICELESS. Well, now anyway. These photos will continue to surface... The carvings were changed out almost every year I think... See the shot in Waikiki Tiki dated 1976? (about 167 pages in?)

I love these visitor photos and only wish more surface soon... The tiki behind your photo are totally different than the ones in mine.
