Joined: Feb 15, 2003 Posts: 3006	F freddiefreelance Posted posted on Mon, Mar 7, 2005 9:23 AM On March 7th, 1848, the Great Mahele was signed by King Kamehameha III, dividing the lands of Hawaii into the "Crown Lands" owned by the King, "Konohiki Lands" owned by the Chiefs, "Government Lands" owned by the Government separately from the King or Chiefs, and "Maka'ainana Lands" owned by the commoners. The division was a great step forward for land reformation on Hawaii since the King could now sell land to make hard currency that could be used to pay off the Hawaiian national debt, and it meant that commoners were actually allowed to own their own property (only 0.8%, 8 tenths of one percent of the land of Hawaii, but it was the first time that the common man was acknowledged to be a landowner). Other interesting historical points of interest: 1876 - Alexander Graham Bell is granted a patent for an invention he calls the telephone (patent # 174,464). He's granted the patent even though he is neither the first inventer to have produced the device nor the first to deliver it to the patent office, but he does have one of the better microphones. Bell then buys out most of the other American & Canadian telephone inventors, thus inventing the Telephone Company. 1926 - Alan Sues, actor & "Laugh-In" Castmember is born. 1988 - Divine, actor (b. 1945), dies. 2001 - The SpongeBob SquarePants You Wish TV special airs on Nickelodeon.
