what wood is good?

this is my first time carving and was wanting to know what type of wood would be the most friendly to my beginner skills ? what is the best way to season the wood , how long will it take . would anybody know of an available supply around the jacksonville or daytona areas of florida. thanks for the help

Welcome eljefe1964Glad you found your way to TC. Some easy woods to carve for a beginner are cabbage or sabal palm. it doesn't need to cure much at all. It is fairly soft but stringy. Great to learn on and plentiful in Florida.
Hang ariound tree trimmers, they will usually give you wood from their jobsite and they will be glad to how you the best woods to use.

Is this type of wood good for masks, wall plaques? Or it best for just tiki and/or tiki totems?
