Looking for Chicago Hotel

Moki & myself will be in Chicago in the near future for a very quick overnight trip. We'd love to see the Hala Kahiki and Trader Vic's.

Anybody have a recommendation for a hotel near Vic's. The Hilton is showing all booked already. Since we will be without a car, we think it's best to be near Vic's so we can walk to many other cool places.

We'd also love to meet up with any of the TC Ohana that will be available to come out and play. We haven't firmed up the date just yet, but it should be some time near the end of the October.

Trader Vics is right in the Palmer House Hotel, so I would recommend staying there. It's a very nice hotel and not too expensive.

Take lots of pictures of Vic's at the Palmer House...
Odds are that it won't be there anymore by the end of the year.

Hey Urban, Ona already said the Palmer House was booked up. Also, the new owners of the Palmer House are complete bastards, and I wouldn't give them a cent.

Fortunately, the Trader Vic's is right in the Loop, or the central business district of Chicago. There are TONS of hotels withoin walking distance of Vic's.

If you're on a budget, try the Ohio House, which is a 50s/60s motel that you can get in the $100 range.

If you want fancier accomodations, every major hotel chain has a hotel within a mile of Trader Vic's. Expect to pay $100 to $200.

Let me know when you plan to go to Hala Kahiki.

There are no trains or busses that go there, and a cab will cost you $40 easily, each way. But it isn't too hard to persuade me to drive a few visitors out there, schedule permitting....

If you like historic buildings you might enjoy the Hotel Burnham. It's in the Reliance Building (1895), designed by Burnham, Root, and Atwood in the style that was unique to Chicago around the turn of the century ("the Chicago style"). I stayed there for Exotica in 2003. The rooms are small but fancy. It's only 3 or 4 blocks from Trader Vic's. The cost is in the price range of many loop hotels (expensive during the week and moderate on weekends).

If you like mid-century buildings and want to splurge you can stay in the Marina Towers (1964) on the 40th. floor in a one-bedroom apartment with mid-century modern decor for $165/night. Not a bad deal!
