Hey all, I'm looking to buy an old wood runabout boat, like in the pics below. Prefer in the Michigan area, but will travel for the right boat. Anyone have any leads?

I've been wanting something like that for a long time too! Here's a good source:

Try Boat Trader as well.

For a better deal try Craigslist.com

Good luck! You got a lot of work ahead of you maintaining one, but they are so beautiful. I've been looking at vintage fiberglass models lately. Some have fiberglass hulls w/wood decks so are much easier to maintain. And there are some great looking ones, some with fins.

Thanks for the links thejab. Some of the fiberglass boats like the boats in the pics you posted are very cool. I really have my heart set on restoring a wood cedar strip from the 40's or 50's. As a matter of fact, I did pick one up a month ago, but I'm not sure I have it in me to do all the work this one needs to be right. I got a really good deal on it, but I might just end up selling it and finding one in better shape. Here's a few pics. It's a 17' Giesler from the 50's. I starting sanding it last week. The hull is good, but most of the ribs will need to be replaced, as well many other trim pieces.

I really admire people who get into restoring old stuff, like boats, trailers, cars, locomotives and rail cars. I sometimes wish I had the time, energy, skills, and the space to attack such a project. As we lose more and more old buildings and such every day it makes these links to our past even more treasured.

Believe me, I know a lot about the loss of great historic buildings and such, being that I live in Detroit. Thankfully the city is starting to make a big turnaround as far as that goes.

Since I was very young, I've always been obsessed with saving and restoring old things. My problem is that I have so many projects, with so little money and time. Everything just takes me twice as long to get done, but hey as long as I'm having fun, that's what counts.

I love these old boats - sweet :)

Just the thing to tow behind my non-existant woody wagon :) Both with matching hibiscus trim of course
