Trader Vics 'Mai Tai Canoe', plus TVs mini Canoe

Pages: 1 19 replies

As well as all the work we have just produced for Mahiki, heres a fun project we created for Tader Vics 'The Mai Tai Canoe', It does also have a full outrigger but it tends to take up a lot of room.
This was carved from a piece of Oak 7' long by 2.5' in Dia.

Wow! That's cool! I saw your reference to the canoe in another thread here, "While I was working on the trader vics canoe...", and I was curious about it. Thanks for posting this...

Did it go to the TV's in London, in the Hilton? I've been to that one...

Nice work! One of those is still on my list to do... looks like next summer a few of us on the Great Lakes will be doing the real thing... and sailing them!

I want one :)

Cheekytiki,

Your canoe is awesome. It looks like it has been around for a century getting knicks and scratches. Killer work. How was it carving a big chunk of Oak. It must be a nice piece of wood. It seems like all the Oak around my neck of the woods likes to split as it cures. Congrats on getting your work in such a nice location.

Cheers,
Will

Thanks Guys, yep, the oak is tough, not only do you have to keep everything very sharp but being that we got it from France it tends to contain a lot of believe it or not ...Shrapnel! I couldn't understand why sparks were flying out of the woood at one point when using the chainsaw, I called the wood mill I bought it from, and they said, yeah, it tends to happen quite a bit!
I would like to make a working one too, but I'd definately choose a softer wood.

Cheeky, Super canoe, looks seaworthy enough too. Yes, that Oak is Tuff Stuff. What else you been working on?

More pics of the canoe with a few freinds

B

Cheeky, that Sure looks like a Thirsty Lot, is that canoe gonna hold enough for them all?
Nice job and super pictures!

Very nice! What is lining the inside of it?

Cheeky, great stuff! I love all your work, has a great vintage feel to it and it all works perfect in classic new and old tiki bars.
I wish you continued success in the New Year! Keep up the great work... great eye candy for a carver!

H

BADASSAWESOME! Looks like you ditched the oak this time and went with a softer wood (pine, perhaps?). What did you do to the inside (the white) is it just painted or is it treated in some way to hold ice or something?

J

Nice, you make it look real easy! Those take a lot of time.

Thanks Guys, the wood is Douglas Fir which was a lot easier to use, but still bloody heavy. The insides are fibreglassed and painted with a foodsafe resin, unfortunately it only comes in Grey and won't hold any more pigment so I can't change the colour.
Johnny,, I've done 4 of them now and although I've sussed out a few tricks to speed up the process they are still one of the hardest things to carve, but I still want to try a full sized one at some point.

Here is the new prototype Mini canoe for Trader Vics, serves 6-8, carved from coco palm.
