Bacardi Zombie

Just wondering if anyone has anything to say about Bacardi Zombie, the drink that's being marketed at 12.5% alcohol (apparently the alcohol part of the mix is 151). I'm not sure if this has a limited market but it hasn't reached Washington state yet. I saw it in Cali and Nevada. It's bright blue, so it kinda doesn't fit with the usual Zombie look. It definitely tastes alright, but I'm not sure what to with it. It seems like it'd be pretty weak straight, but in a bad Cisco kind of way. I mixed it with some Cave Rum and it tastes decent, I guess. I'll have to see if I can come up with a recipe for it after I'm a little better at mixing drinks.

BTW, the Zombie (real Zombie) has been my favorite drink for quite some time but I never had really tasted straight rum until recently. I went on a Caribbean cruise, and on the ship they had a good deal on Bacardi and Coke. I figured "what the hell, I'm in the Caribbean, I might as well drink rum" but I swear Bacardi tastes like pure rubbing alcohol straight. It doesn't taste particularly good with Coke, either. I bought a bunch of rum to take back during the cruise. The Cave Rum (Turks & Caicos Islands), which was extremely cheap, tastes a million times better than Bacardi straight. I'm no expert but it seems like if you can't drink any alcohol straight without gagging, then it's no good. The only other liquor that I can say was worse straight than Bacardi is the pint of Albertson's brand vodka that I bought in AZ on sale for $1.50 for a pint. After two shots, I had a terrible headache and went to sleep instead.

If you're talking about good old Barcardi white rum, then yes. Most white rums are very chemically unrefined and taste very bad when drank alone. As you maybe have already found out, more expensive rums taste alot better in drinks, and can even stand alone in their own glass. Good luck in the future with your rum adventures.

Thanks for the advice. I did not realize that white rum is going to taste bad regardless. I'll keep that in mind in the future. Would you say I can expect the same flavour from similar white rums, or do some taste differently?

Question? If white rum is unrefined in its flavor and just happens to taste like crap, does that mean that more expensive (flavorful) dark rums have more chemicals in them?

i am also I might as well drink rum" but I swear Bacardi tastes like pure rubbing alcohol straight. It doesn't taste particularly good with Coke, either. I bought a bunch of rum to take back during the cruise.Thanks for sharing,keep it up.

You are going to find that white rums will all taste different depending on brand, but none of them are something you would enjoy drinking on their own. They are fine for mixing though. It is unfortunate that Bacardi is the first white rum you've tried because it really is crap. The only decent rum they make is Bacardi 8 which I believe is a fantastic rum, fine for cocktails, but even better on its own.

Not sure what you mean by chemicals, but dark rums get their flavour from the barrels they are aged in. Everyone has different tastes so just because a rum is more expensive that doesn't mean it is better or you should then expect it to taste better. Rums get more expensive the longer they are aged due to the time spent waiting for them to age so they can be bottled, and also factoring in what is lost due to evaporation (the Angels share).
I personally don't like very many rums that have been aged for a long time as I find they tend to have a very woody taste to them which I don't enjoy, however there would be a lot of people out there who like them just for that reason as you might also.
