cool book spotted: Exotic Postcards by Alan Beukers

Pages: 1 2 replies

Aloha

Saw this one at Quimby's in Chicago today and got a bit jazzed.
Wanted to hep you all to it.

Hardbound book with two hundred pages worth of reproductions of turn of the century postcards showing 'exotic' people of all types: Hindus, Native Americans, Pygmies, Zulus, and plenty of Polynesians.

Fascinating and super-exploitative documentation from a century ago.

Foreward by Theroux, whom I can take or leave... buy it for the photos...

Amazon has it for $26 (cover price: $35).

Looks like an interesting book. Another book, with a similar topic, is 'Delivering Views: Distant Cultures in Early Postcards' by Christraud Geary. This book has a 30 page chapter on the photographers and postcards in the Pacific Islands. I haven't read this book yet, but the images are quite good.
