Hello all! for our foray into the desert this July, my partner and i are building a bamboo tiki bar, complete with mugs made of bamboo culms. I've been only able to find scant information, even on this site, about what sealant (if any) to use when making mugs that will be filled with alcohol and juice? Is there an easy nontoxic sealant that can be found in hardware stores? It probably needs to be somewhat thick, in case there may be small cracks in the bamboo... thanks for any help! (my first post to this lovely forum!) -Horgaloha |

Aloha, welcome! I don't know if there's a material you can use safe enough, maybe you can try putting a glass insight and working with the bamboo on the outside.... |

There are infact non-toxic sealant products. One is called General Finishes Salad Bowl Finish. It is specifically designed for sealing wooden salad bowl. This should definately work on bamboo as well. |

i've decided to use "Good Stuff" tests on some samples are pretty encouraging, as it dries fast, cures well overnight, and repels water (and alcohol) very well. we'll see how it survives the desert, however! -Horgaloha! |

I was thinking that you could just use dirty rum. Welcome to TC! Mahalo McTiki |
