Ahoy All!

Time to stop lurking around here and share a new carving in progress.. Thought I'd try a traditional tiki this time. This lil' guy is carved from a piece of Basswood Benzart gave me a while back (Thanks again Ben!). Stands about 8 inches tall. Getting down to the nitty-gritty..

Open to any comments/suggestions for the details and finishing.. Thanks for looking!

what a perfect start! nice piece o wood too. I'll be watching this as i've just started to tackle a tang, but you make it look so easy!!

cheers.

B

What, Not finished YET?

M

Sweet Tang! Get back to him!

Here's more progress.. Controlling the symmetry has gotten tougher in the deeper areas, but he's balancing out ok. The armpit areas were tough for sure..

Thanks for looking!

He is looking good...even without the addition above.

Looks great!

Nice form...it's hard to nail the angles on Tangaroa just right, and you've done it well. I've only carved three in my own career. You'll be ready for fishing soon!

Just a few more details and sanding, then this guy's ready for stain..

Wow Captain,

that's some smooth work and a very nice style, I'm impressed. Can't wait to see how you finish it.

WOW is right. Crisp and clean great shape,

Very Nice! That guy is goin to look great with stain. Stained basswod will give him excellent tonal variation. Can't wait to see him done.

Beautiful piece. Wow...thanks for some additional inspiration for furthering my very limited experience!

I'm looking forward to seeing him all finished!

Skully - very cool Tang. Your work is always super clean! And if it looks this good unstained... :)

C

Wow, perfect!! Ultra clean! Congrats!! Is it going to be some stain?

Yep! First coat of stain:

Nothing is 100% perfect, but this little guy is really, really, really, really, really close to it ! :tiki:

Btw, his cousin is living here in Munich at the museum for ethnology:
