Packing the bags tonight!
First off to Salvation MTN followed by the mud pots by Niland and some post apocalyptic photos at Bombay Beach. Then it's off to PS, check in, change into something festive and off to the show at M. Might try to take some snaps but doubt I'll capture anything quite like Cherry Capri's indian leg wrestling from the opening night @ M 2 years ago.

Did someone mention Witco???????????

iViva Palm Springs WooHoo!

What a great Palm Springs weekend. For a couple of days, one gets to live a midcentury-modern dream life. There are so many kindred spirits in one place here, and they love to share their treasures.

It all began with the opening of my Contemporary Idol show at M-modern:

As we always do, we stayed at my old friend Pete Moruzzi's house:

Pete wrote "Havana Before Castro", and I photographed it. Our next book will be on classic dining in America, and it will contain mostly my photos, some of them taken at the Mai Kai. Pete had gotten himself a new toy:

A 1965 Buick Riviera with clam shell headlights!

What a beaut!

I love going window shopping (rarely can afford anything there) at the Modernism show at the Convention Center:

MCM dealers from all over the country have their stalls there:

My wife volunteers at the P.S. modcom booth:

Here are some of the cool things I liked at this year's show:

Up next: The big bash, the annual P.S. Modcom benefit party!

After the show we went home to get ready for the evening's festivities, which started out with a little reception at the Gand's Alexander A-frame:

Here's Gary Gand's Studebaker Avanti in front of their house. Gary did a book with Julius Shulman on Chicago mid-century modernism. Here is their house as seen from the backyard...

...which is inhabited by quite a few Tikis:

The big event of the evening was the Palm Springs Modcom party at a house at the Tamarisk Country Club:

This year's theme was Blake Edwards' film "The Party"

They used several concepts from the movie:

White balloons for soap bubbles in the pool

This guy has a brief role in the film...

The best idea was the drinking, drunken waiter "running gag":

Life imitating art:

Naomi wore this fantastic Rudi Gernreich dress from Audrey Moorehead's vintage Gernreich collection:

We were happy we got to know Heather David and her husband:

Heather authored "Mid-Century by the Bay" http://www.calmodbooks.com/, a book I have always admired.

Above and below are my two favorite pics I got to snap that evening.

Next: More Mod Sunday

WOW!

Great pics! Thanks for those.

Hi Sven, Thanks for posting these. I know how tired you must be. These photos are magnificent! Love the Buick Riviera!

Thanks for the pics, folks. Keep 'em coming. Boy, I can't keep living vivcariously through you guys. I've got to make it out for this show.

Marilyn even took a shower for the event :D

Hey, that's my home with the three Shags over the bar from last year's Modernism Week!

While virtually everything is sold out, Tiki-philes would want to try to get tickets to the Donald Wexler designed Royal Hawaiian Estates, which are still available: http://www.modernismweek.com/event-registration/?ee=22

More info can be found at http://royalhawaiianestates.org/index.html

I have seen that Mod Jetsetter bar up close and personal. That couple knows how to party.
The Royal Hawaiian Estates is a treasure and was the last place I was able to talk to Huell Howser.

Great memories.

We'll be there 13th through the 20th

We are planning to meet some TCERS at Billy Reed's on Saturday before going to The SHAG Store Party. We will be there at 5pm. Come find us in the bar....Woohoo!

Looking forward to it!. We'll see you guys tomorrow!

T

I couldn't book a room for under $250.00 for tomorrow so I guess Rosemarie and I will go for the day.

Y'All say hey to my cousin Nat Reed.

He is the son of my Moms sister Marilyn who wrote the book

" How Daddy Became a Beachcomber" when she was 19. Good stuff.

Look it up if you haven't yet. Always new tiki freaks out there.

Aloha!

T

I go to Nat and also to Shag's store every time I go to PS. I didn't know that Nat was related to BB. I did buy a very nice lamp from the Shag store and Josh was kind enough to sign it for me.
