1950s / Original Places and Tiki Bars of California

Greetings! I'm taking a much-needed getaway back in time, preferably the 1950s, by myself Mon-tues
and want to hit all or many of the great retro spots in CA, tiki
clubs as well as any old relics from the past still with us...
Would greatly appreicate any and all suggestions... Drive ins (eg Pinks, etc.), diners, music venues (eg Cocunut Grove, El Monte Legion Stadium), furniture stores of the 50s, etc. ... preferably original places and not remakes like Ed Debevniks, but that's ok too. Thanks Will share pics with you all when I get back to reality or unreality.

Rather than asking us to do all the work for you, why not go to Critiki where you can locate the places in the area where you will be travelling and then you can come back here and search the Locating Tiki thread for more info on each place?

El Monte Legion Stadium - there's a place I haven't thought about in years. Long gone, my friend - I believe it was torn down in the '70s. And the Coconut Grove? Dude, you need to adjust the settings on your time machine - you shot right past all the stuff you want to see. Do a uie and go back 40 years or so. And if you don't mind, bring me back a case of Stephen Crane mugs and Grace Slick. Mahalo!

My first reaction was a bitter "Good Luck!" But when I saw you mention El Monte, I thought of a classic Tiki tour that still yields some original vintage Tiki places. Most of them are apartment buildings, but you will also have one classic Polynesian restaurant to find sustenance at. AND the most amazing original Tiki store in the country.

I would start on top at the 210 Freeway at the Rosemead Exit, and go all the way South on Rosemead Blvd past South El Monte down to El Monte/Pico Rivera. You will find:

The Outrigger Apartments. Street number is missing here, look for a nice wide A-frame on the left side of Rosemead Blvd.:

Then the Kona Kai Apts, marvel at all the different Tiki posts and its A-frame/waterfall/Island mosaic entrance:
