Tiki in UK outside London ?

Hi,

I am going on a roadtrip around UK in a couple of weeks. The tour is not planned entirely yet, but I was wondering if there's anything tiki worth visiting on the way. The rough plan is to start in London and visit some of the locations I already found here, go north to Scotland, then SE, Wales, South coast and back to London (...fly to Berlin and go to the Wasssermusik festival).

Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

There used to be a place, Mai Tai Tiki Lounge, at a surf spot called Croyde in North Devon (see http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=10428&forum=2&0) but I don't think it's there any more... I can't find it on-line - and I never visited it.

Thanks, the Captain Cook birthplace museum looks really interesting.
i couldn't find anything about the Mai Kai on the web either, Devon is on my wishlist, so in case we go there I'll let you know if it still exists.

The Pit River Museum in Oxford has a little tiki style stuff and some great shrunken heads.

I'm afraid the Mai Tai at Croyde is definitely closed, and has been so for a couple of years, although there are still pages on the Internet talking about it in the present tense. I went to Croyde about a month ago, and got funny looks from the locals when I asked for the Home House Hotel: I got a bewildered and suspicious stare, and was told, "its... not... been trading as a hotel... for at least two years" said in a tone reminiscent of a "local" in a horror film! The Oxford Retreat "tiki bar" is distinctly understated, and only really worth visiting if you're in Oxford on some other pretext. I'm afraid Tiki bars outside London do still seem a bit thin on the ground, though I've just been informed there's one now in Glastonbury...I've no further details, I'm afraid. You might find Kew Gardens in Richmond, London, are worth a visit: they are probably the world's best botanical gardens, with vast tropical glasshouses. and extensive plant collections.
If you're up North, you might find Blackpool interesting.. it's a cheesy Northern seaside resort, trying to be a British version of Las Vegas, and of interest to the urban archaeologist.
There are various Art Deco places around. If you're in Morecambe, do visit the newly-restored Midland Hotel, and Brucciani's, a Grade II listed Art Deco Cafe. There's also a very pleasant Art Deco tour bookable at the tourist office.

Cafe Mambo in Swansea has some tiki reference and do some mean drinks, downstairs is quiet chilled some tiki paintings never seen any mugs being used though but cool place, later in the evening it gets a bit wilder: not a tiki place full stop but close too and worth a visit if your in that neck of the woods.

Cardiff has a the Hawaiian http://www.thehawaiian.co.uk take a look it is a wild place like hawaii meet 18/30 i was there when i didnt now tiki many moons ago enjoyed it but cant give a current on it i'm afraid.

Not been into Cardiff in a while will take a look and update if anything has changed - is there nothing in Bristol I'll ask tommorow going over the bridge to meet a friend who owns a pub there i'll ask him?

Cardiff would be agood place for a tiki bar if there werent so many other places to go its a great night out though - swansea dito but dont expect to much culture!!
