As Polynesian as Nixon (WSJ June 30, 2007)

The "How's Your Drink" column in Saturday's Wall Street Journal is always interesting. This one's great. I really like the image of Nixon knocking back a couple of mai tai's as the world closes in.

I was shocked to read about Nixon and his appreciation for tiki drinks. I've been researching and writing about rum-loving world leaders and haven't come across this tidbit before....or since. Conjures up some interesting imagery!

"Oddly, the Mai Tai was the favorite drink of Richard Nixon, a man who -- though sorely lacking in beach-bum credentials -- found solace in the Trader's tiki fantasy land."

Lacking in beach-bum credentials? Nixon was from California and lived in a big beach house in San Clemente!

I have always heard Nixon would order the Navy Grog most times he went to Trader Vics.

That is the story I have heard as well. I don't know if it was in the Smuggler's Cove book, or one of Beachbum's books.
But the story of him slipping out of the White House and in through the back door at TV's for a few Navy Grogs is certainly a compelling one.
