Oceanic Symbols for safe passage?

Pages: 1 7 replies

Does anyone know of an oceanic symbol that carries the meaning for safe passage over water? I know there are carved fish hook from the Maori. Any others?

May your canoe be swift and your destination all that you hoped.

But you were probably asking for a icon more than anything else.......

Sounds like somebody needs a liberal application of the Lucky Mojo Curio Co.'s ever-popular Safe Travel Hoodoo Oil ?! :o :P

Not sure if this is the type of thing you are looking for.
This first image is from Bougainville Island in the Solomons. Representing a protective spirit and used as a canoe ornament.

This is a protector spirit for a canoe prow from Maravo Lagoon in New Georgia, Solomon Islands.

More practical than spiritual is this navigation chart from the Marshall Islands for safe passage. I love this image as it could be a Modern designed piece of art.

Another prow piece from the Marquesas Islands. The figure has each foot set on a skull. This design kinda looks sci-fi.

The opening narrative from the film of James Michener's "Hawaii" contains this passage --

"of Mano-the-Shark, who guided his children through secret pathways of the sea, when they were lost."

-- aiding the Navigators of Bora Bora during their voyage of discovery to the Hawaiian Islands.

Hope this may be useful.
