Tiki in Paris?

Aloha!

Does anyone have any suggestions on any Tiki related stuff to do in Paris???

There is a new museum (Musee du Quai Branly) that has a big Oceania exhibit & huge Moai heads so we will definately be going there... Just wondering if there were any worthwhile bars, restaurants, etc...

Yeah me too - I will be visiting Paris in May - it would be great to know any tiki-goings-on or even where the decent cocktail bars are.

Gonna hit Harry's and the Hemingway at the Ritz for sure - but where else?

I've heard rumors of a rum bar...?

Also - any advice on liquor stores - would not mind a look there either if there's a decent one. Of course visiting duty free is a given.

Looking for the same advise...will be there May 5th-12th. Saw the posting about the museum, but nothing other than that. Are you Parisians holding out on us?

Regarding "Tiki" pop culture: I have often wondered why there is NO Tiki bar/Poly pop restaurant tradition in Paris, since the French had a similarly close connection to Tahiti than Americans did to Hawaii. My explanation is that they had too much of that European intellectual "good taste" to allow themselves such folly. :)

My suggestion? Catch the Eurostar to London after visiting the Quai Branly!

There's a few rum bars, especially this one, from the 30's : http://www.larhumerie.fr/ (the Accra, a kind of fish fried are wonderful and spicy).
There may be other exhibitions, have a look on tikicentral or look around. But Le Quai Branly is the place for Oceanic Arts in Paris.
A good liquor store for rum and wine is Lavinia (3 boulevard Madeleine) : http://www.lavinia.fr/LaviniaFR/ They have an all floor of liquors. (But expensive). Have a look first on regular stores, such as Monoprix and others. French buy their rum in Supermarket or general food store.

Gah! Wouldn't you know this thread would pop up while the Mrs and I were IN PARIS. I like to un-tether myself from the tech when pleasure travelling, so of course I'm home now without having visited the collection at Musee du quai Branley.

Anyone been to Branley? Does anyone have any pictures of the neat stuff we missed?

Katie and I took a couple of awful blurry photos at the British Museum in London of their tiny Polynesian collection. And no, we DIDN'T make it to TV London.

Now I'm just ashamed....

I have been to the quai Branly museum, it is a great museum, high quality oceanic pieces, like Marquesan bone carvings, new guinea, giant slit drums, the oceanic collection is really cool, they also have this 4 or 5 story circular room that's all black and filed up up with some ancient musical instruments, some hawaiian drums, tahitian stuff, asian etc... I definitively recommend, the museum itself is also pretty cool. There also this vertical garden building thing to check out too.

unfornately there is no tiki bar in Paris.
I heard there is some in the south of France. I guess it's because of the weather in paris... too cold!

and one sunday in the month they have a show... not that bad...
well since we have nothing it's ok :wink:
