This deserves to be in Tiki Music, but it's not so much a Tiki event. Plus according to rule #8 of Tiki Central:
Spamming, posting the same message in more than one forum, or posting unwanted advertising in the forums) is strictly prohibited and will not be tolerated.

Tikiyaki Jim said today he will be there to be a Vender.
Maybe I can talk him into joining in on a surf Jam.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Ran(aka Kick the Reverb)'s Band The Sand Devils)will be at this event.
The First Surf Band to play a Tiki Oasis, 1st year in SD.

they usually don't play outside of San Diego area.
So this is a great time to catch them.
too bad its at a bar, instead of a rented Hall, we could have him make drinks for everybody.

Jeff, don't let ANY of these people define what you are doing as not being tiki....who are they, anyway? The arbiters of all things tiki?

I don't particularly like surf music. But I support you 100% and appreciate your support of so many bands on this forum. You come to our band's gigs, and if not for people like you and a few other gracious, friendly, people on this forum, we would have no one coming to see us from here.

This Friday, our band will play again to a fully packed house of people that have nothing to do with tiki central. And that's fine with me. We will be playing vintage hapa haole music, that probably is not tiki enough for people...!! We won't have mugs, or artwork...just solid playing. The older people in the crowd who will be watching us will be the exact people who lived during the real tiki era. I leave it to them to define what tiki is or isn't, since they were there and most of us were mere babes during that time.

So surf rock is not tiki? So what? Low brow art is? Seems like people want to exclude whatever they don't personallylike.

I will say it again: I appreciate anything done well, and with skill and talent. That includes surf rock, low brow art, whatever....if something is good then it is good, and this convention you posted about features some of the very best surf bands around. It's a veritable whose who of surf music!

I am totally looking forward to this event!! Looks like a great line up!!

Wow!!! thanks Guys.

its good to know that some people care about what I am doing.
and for you to post it publicly means a lot to me.
I do get support from some people off line sometimes, but they don't say it on TC.
I was blown away how many people posted in the Bob Bogle passing away thread,
saying that they liked surf.
yet none of those people come to surf, and or tiki music events.
hmmmmmm

Lucas, I would love if you would come to the event I am doing,
its fairly close to where we live.

Yeah, what are you thinking Jeff?

Surf and tiki don't go together...

I have no idea, why I think that Surf and tiki go together.
oh wait, you mean this years Oasis is almost all surf, and its almost sold out.

I too support your efforts since you have been kind enough to make your own threads about the surf shows. I don't care for surf music (except maybe The Rapiers) and you most likely won't see me at a surf show unless it's to support a fellow musician. But I do get the tiki connection.

So in the spirit of "Tiki Music" being all-inclusive, look for my upcoming Uruguayan psych-artpop-garage-jazz concerts thread coming soon!

Anybody got some ear plugs I can borrow for Oasis??

But wouldn't you agree that something done well, even if not exactly your cup of tea might be worth checking out at least once?

I really don't like the band, Journey, and never have. But I had a chance to see them with the new Filipino singer, Arnel Pineda, and man I was impressed! I am just using that as an example, of course.

I too, am not a major fan of surf music. Though, growing up here in socal I have been exposed to it pretty much my whole life. I had a couple of friends in high school that were in a major HB surf band back in the day. And of course, in my first rock band when I was 12, we covered walk don't run and pipeline (Like I am sure all bands eventually do!)

What I don't like about it is the somewhat repetetive nature of it, the lack of strong melodies, the lack of vocals, and the fact that a lot of the musicians involved in it have a basic skill level at best...not all, but a lot that I have heard. It's basically 2-3 chord music, which can either be a good thing (Like in the Blues) or a boring thing, depending on one's mood.

What I do like about it is the sense of style, the tone of the instruments. I mean, who doesn't really like a twangy guitar drenched in reverb? The music evokes a time and a place to me that is good. Instantly recogizeable. And some bands, like the Dynotones and the Eliminators or Glascow Tiki shakers, have taken this to a very professional and tight level.
That Glascow tiki shaker guitarist would be a good guitarist in any type of music, for example.

For me, the key lies in blending that tone and attitude with other types of music. A good example of a guitarist doing this would be Jim Bacchi, of course.

Lucas thank for the back up on that.
and Squid, thanks for the back handed compliment.

I think you guys just may not have heard really good instro/surf bands.
please take 15 min, and give these few bands a listen.
they are all very melodic bands, and not just 1 4 5 progressions.

Jeff you are a dork.
Lucas you need to go back to work.

Y'know you can't even make a positive comment without ridiculous critique that misses the entire point.

Do you want me to list all the "surf" bands I like to live up to your standards?

The Shadows
Glasgow Tiki Shakers
Shall I go on??? This is stupid.

I can list a million jazz groups and I don't like ALL of them. Same for any genre.

Let's try it this way.

Liver and Onions makes me hurl.

But I don't care if someone eats it at my table. Even if the smell wafts up my nostrils.

And I DO appreciate that it was well prepared, with a nice presentation and made with love.

But do not DOG me to eat it.

Well said!

you know what is sad,
nobody is forcing you to read my threads about surf show,
If I start a thread and the title is about a surf band playing.
And you don't like surf, Fine.. Don't read it.
its very easy to skip over it.
I don't see how posting about something, and then bumping it,
is dogging you to eat it/go to it.

I stopped Emailing you Squid about stuff a long time ago.
because I knew it was a waste of time,
and I stopped posting about my stuff in other threads,
Happy? No, you gotta come in my threads and talk smack now.

Raveene, go play with Kenny and Grog.
and mind your own business.
