Dave -

Sharing these Art's de Triomphes with everyone and reading the medium employed to create your boards - ballpoint ink on wood(!) - my memory reminded me of one particular morning at grade school when I got busted for doodling all over the inside lid of my old wooden desk..

..the teach accused me of daydreaming and sneaking a ballpoint pen to school.

I thought 'yeah..but LOOK! I didn't damage the top surface, and what do you care anyway? You'll never 'get' skulls, waves, skateboards or surfer's crosses..IDIOT!'

tikig, we need to go back to this school, and find that desk! this is a goldmine my friend! ballpoint surf desk art rules, and to have to "sneak" the pen, purely awesome!!!

William D. Lamb Elementary School (Brookhurst St and Yorktown Ave)was converted to a adult learning facility many many years ago. The desk in question undoubtedly ended up in an Orange County landfill facility (Irvine!! HA!) but who knows? Various school districts in are known for holding public auctions where they dump this stuff cheap. Maybe my desk is still in use in South America :):

God, Dav..if I could go back in time and retrieve mine (and others) desks you would find a treasure chest of pre-adult surfers art - post 60s - still naive still brutally honest.

I'm sure many of you have parallel memories.

S

totally! i used to get busted for drawing all over all of my desk, schoolwork, tests, etc. so funny!

The wicked deep sea fish design it very cool - did you use a wood burning tool?

S

thanks robb, no they are all done with ball point pen! hand drawn my friend!

Frickin' awesome approach.

S

thx brofessional!

S

this is a new medium for me, coquille paper rules!!

too cool,Dave!
The old punch and judy puppets have always captivated my artistic curiosity
ever since the wee years!
it's great that the Sleestaks
another ingrained icon of youthful Saturday mornings
have taken a similar interest in puppetry!
Good job weirdo!
I fink it's pretty super!

S

thx for all the kind werds sir! have you ever tried drawing on that stuff?

Love to hear the storyteller's parable - and glimpse the audience sitting around the storyteller's feet.

Frightening, dramatic and hauntingly beautiful.

The Sleestak with a puppet is sweetness!!! Right On Dave!!

S

"once upon a time, there were three foolish humans who thought it might be a "GOOD" idea to take an inflatable raft over a 10,000 foot drop.............." oooooh, ahhhhhhhhhh.

diggity-dig it dave!!!!!!!

ur style suits those high-falutin' materials to the tee!

What the HAIL is coquille board?

hey Dave!
You need to keep these sleestaks under wraps....

the fuzz is on a manhunt!

S

hahahaha! that is ssssssssssssssssssso rad! coquille paper is this crazy paper that is textured. a lot of comics use it, its really fun and you can get insane gradients on it. its also called stipple paper. trys it! you'll likes fer sher.

P

you know, that's pretty cool. it almost looks like stipple.

i'm curious about the sleestack hand. i thought they were 3 finger claws?

[ Edited by: pdrake 2009-10-06 22:22 ]

Perry, it's obvious that it's a Human-Sleestak hybrid
cooked up in a lab at Monsanto....

S

actually he is correct, the sleestak are no fools though, so they wear GLOVES so they can protect their secret identity from the public! nowadays with all the tattoos and such, its not weird to have a face like this, but hands, now thats a dead give away, and a job stopper! good eye!

Hey Dave, that coquille paper is a lot of fun. I used for some rubber stamps I designed a long time ago.
I like the Punch puppet, too. When are you going to do a Sleestak magician?

S

sleeveless! im on it!

S

ok i had to do it!! still on coquille!

and made it better.

heres the newest one in the works!

ribbit!

i just love this little fellar!

gotta stain him now!

Those look really cool stained, love how you have stained around the image but have left the wood behind the image unstained. Reminds me of a soft focus vignette photo effect.
