The Music Videos You Like Thread!

How about a thread where you post non-tiki videos you like, and maybe explain why you like them?

I'll start out with D'Angelo. No, I don't like hip hop much, but this guy plays entirely live, and has obvious talent. That bass player is probably one of the most sought after bassists in the world, Pino Palladino...his tone is what appeals to me, and the style he is playing is something Raphael Saadiq, D'Angelo and Pino cooked up: Playing with a huge amount of time lag in their rythem..in other worlds, playing extremely behind the beat. You would not think playing off- tempo would make for really funky music, but it does. It's remnicent of some of the early art-rap music (Tribe called quest, etc)where the samples did'nt always line up properly, and sounded a bit disjointed. It's a hard technique for a great musician to purposely play off-tempo, but when done properly...it totally works!

Darius Rucker. I never liked Hootie and The Blowfish, and I rarely like contemporary country music, but when the two mix...the results seem to really work! Darius' voice seems really suited for this genre.

Jimi Hendrix First TV Appearance 1965

Jimi's first TV appearance as a back up player for "Buddy & Stacey" singing Shot Gun, on a show called Night Train. The guitar player next to him must be the band leader because you can see how pissed off he was getting by Jimi's antics.
Jimi's guitar/fret sliding is so classic for this straight laced choreographed
number.
He was a legend from the beginning.

An example of why he is The King.

The greatest voice in country music. A sentimental favorite, this was GROG' first song GROG remember hearing of Eddie Arnold's. At nearly 60 years old he makes a comeback and has a number one hit:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Wu2S4uyuM4

Cowboy. The Number 1 hit in 1976 by Eddy Arnold.
In 1976 Eddy Arnold returned to RCA to release his comeback recording.
It was named "Country Music Countdowns Pick Hit" and it went to number 1.
He remains the most successful Country performer in History.
According to Billboard no other Country performer has spent more weeks
at the top of the charts than Eddy Arnold.
And he holds the World Record for Most Decades at the Top of the Charts by Any Performer.....
Country ...Pop...Rock....doesn't matter. He holds it.
Taking the honor from the legendary Bing Crosby, his idol.

This video make GROG tear up every time:

This one speaks for itself:

Juan De La Cruz band: Veteran Filipino rock band from the 70's. Obviously influenced by new york bands like the New york dolls, ramones, etc...It always amazes me how much Drummer Pepe Smith looks like Willem Dafoe!

Julie London with the Bobby Troup Quintet:

What a voice!

Carl Orff....

Yeah, this the theme has been overused in a million different movies, but I always find it delightfully chilling!

Not necessarily always my favorite music (accept for Massive Attack and Portishead, 2 of my favorites of all time) .. but these are some of my favorite videos. These are what I came up with off the top of my head. (yes, I like the creepy/weird stuff).

Massive Attack - Teardrop

Radiohead - Just

Portishead - Only You

Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy

Johnny Cash! An old classic.....what is the guitar player saying around 1:26? (Looks like he shakes his head and says "shit" twice)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1xSt7iganA&feature=related

My choice of music probably won't fit in with most of you but my new favorite music videos are

Chevelle - Jars
I love the ironic ending and the cryptic refernce to "Croatoan"

Slipknot - Snuff
Haunting song and a freaky video

For me a music video, much like cheese and crackers, must combine two things well: Music and video. And each element should be great if I am going to say "Wow, that's a great music video!" (OK, maybe I'll accept "pretty good" music depending on my mood, but the video part has to be great. Otherwise it's just a pretty good song that happens to be on a video.)

Here are some great music videos...

Chromatic Nights by Pia Fraus
A lot of my dreams and a few of my afternoons have been like this video.

Blue Dragon by Hot Lava
Hot Lava has songs I like better but this video is really swell.

Ordinary Song by the Little Ones
Very clever. I really like that the audio was tweaked to include ambient sound for the scenes or to make it sound like it was coming through different audio sources.

I can't figure out how I know this Guster song so well. Maybe it was used in a TV ad? Maybe I have a secret life I'm unaware of and it's more pop than me. However it found its way into the back of my brain what's important is it made me find the swell video.

Satellite by Guster

The original Fleisher music videos with Betty Boop!

The Magic Numbers have a really great song Take A Chance which has a video with some interesting elements in it.

Their NEW! single The Pulse is a somewhat overwrought ballad (sounds like music for A Very Special Scene in an indie flick) but the video is really well made with some very attractive shots and a couple head reeling ones.

gotta love carlos too.

If you're an old fart like me, you might remember Terry Reid. He was the first choice to be Led Zeppelins lead singer, but he bowed out and suggested his friend Robert P. instead.
This my favorite song. A rough video (with a part 2) but give it a listen.

It tends to ramble on after 7 minutes or so....
This song really brings back memories of the 60s & 70s with 5 of my friends that aren't amoung us anymore.

Have always had a weakness for Grace:

This video isn't all that great except for getting to see Peter Murphy, Trent Reznor, Geordie White and Atticus Ross perform together, doing one of the greatest club songs of the '80s (though it was actually a '78 release).

My muse. One of the greatest performance artists of our generation. I've seen her perform on several occasions and I'm awestruck every time.

All awesome! I was actually searching Nina Hagen/Lene Lovich videos and got sidetracked by Laurie.

Fear is one of the greatest punk bands ever. Did you realize that Lee Ving was in the 1987 movies Dudes with Jon Cryer, Daniel Roebuck, Catherine Mary Stewart and Flea (as well as playing Mr. Body in the Tim Curry movie Clue)? He did an awesome job playing Missoula. Dude. Somebody just stepped on my head.

You can't have any Nina without some Klaus:

And you can't have Fear without Cro-Mags:

For good measure, let's inject some Exploited to go with the Black Flag:

And some real Old School punk:

Hey Talo Ka
Wave that old fart flag proudly. I turn 60 next month. If you would have asked me back in the 70s if I would see that happen, you would have gotten a are you kidding me look.
This is great

This video for Martin Denny's Quiet Village is brilliant! Yeah, I'm sure it's been done before, but it just works great with this piece of music.
