Pages: 1 2 70 replies

Hi All,

I know that this is not a Tiki event, but there have been many tiki events lately that has been a mix of tiki and surf music, (Tiki Oasis, Tiki Caliente, and the MariePalooza benefit) This is a Huge Labor of Love for me, and it's a lot of work and time putting together this weekend of shows.
Basically its the surf equivalent of Tiki Oasis, and I have bands coming from around the world. So I hope that some of you tiki people will try to make it. Thanks for reading this.

  • Your host Jeff "Big Tiki Dude" Hanson

A few notes about each band:

The Space Cossacks– Originally from Washington D.C., The Space Cossacks are widely recognized as one of the most popular and influential bands of the 1990's great surf revival, if not all time. We are honored that The Space Cossacks, with their original line-up intact, will appear at the SG101 Convention as part of their 10th anniversary reunion tour.

Frankie and the Pool Boys- This Bay Area group was never supposed to perform live, but agreed to come together for the SG101 Convention. Featuring Ferenc Dobronyi from Pollo Del Mar with Danny and Tony from The TomorrowMen, Karen of Meshugga Beach party, and Naotaka Seki from Japan's Surf Coasters on drums with several special guests.

The Wadadli Riders- The Surf Music Kings of the Caribbean! Lorenzo Valdambrini, the leader of the band is also the founder of the hugely successful Surfer Joe Festival in Italy. This will be the Wadali Riders second tour of California.
(Along with the Space Rangers from Germany, we are pleased to have The Wadadli Riders as our first international bands at the SG101 convention.)

The Insect Surfers- Planet Earth's longest running modern surf bands has been preforming since the Summer of 1979. They have released 3 CDs, and a best-of album, with appearances on about 30(!) compilations. The Insect Surfers strive to bring you the best in modern surfadelic sounds.

The Space Rangers- From Ulm, Germany, The Space Rangers' stomping beats and bass lines are the solid reef on which the delayed guitar riffs break, topped with whitecaps of organ harmonies. If Godzilla had a favorite band, it would be the Space Rangers.

The Atomic Mosquitos- From Washington D.C., The Atomic Mosquitos are led by the twin reverb guitars of Joe Marencic and Paul Carson with Stephen Blickenstaff adding theremin touches and driven along by Sean Rush on bass and Craig Stang's drums. They deliver a full-on, uptempo surf assault. They have released three CDs.

The Surfside IV- With fans numbering in the dozens, these surf rockers from Sonora, Arizona have managed to thrill themselves and audiences alike, despite their willingness to don a fez. Never afraid to make a true spectacle and always providing an ample target area for empty beer cans, a Surfside IV show is a veritable reverb-soaked cavalcade of high-speed guitar, bass and drum acrobatics.

The Men of Mystery- A tribute to England's legendary Shadows, this group features members of The Detonators, joined by Marty Tippens (The Planktones, The Trespassers), and Abdel Khineche (a long time Shadows devotee.)

The Legends of Surf Jam - We have asked members several First Wave groups to join a fantastic, all-star backing band, to perform the music we cherish. This a very rare opportunity for you to see the songs performed by the people that first recorded and wrote them.

Starting the day's music will be the very popular SG101 Members Jam.
I am thinking of trying something different to organize it this year.
Look for a separate thread on that later.

Please plan on coming 4PM, Thursday, August 5th to a BBQ at my place, followed by a show in nearby Anaheim.
Monday, August 9th will be a day of sight seeing and field trips.

Thanks for all your enthusiasm and support over the years.

one month away.
Hope to see some of you locals there.

Jeff(btd)

So one of the members of the surf forum donated a guitar for me to raffle off at the Big event.
and the proceeds will go to all of the bands playing.

so see the guitar go here:
http://surfguitar101.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=12776

hope to see some TCers there.
Mahalo Jeff(btd)

and I was really Happy, and surprised to see that Sven included this in his recent "Sound of Tiki" cd.

I admit that surf and tiki don't cross over even 50/50,
but there are elements of surf that are Exotic, and Hawaiian influenced sometimes.

Free your mind and you ass will follow.

Are there any dive bars in the area that open between 6am-8am ??

Let's have a TC morning cocktail pre-meet. There's nothing cooler (or maybe it's more pathetic :D) than drinking in a bar before 9am !!

John,
you mean the drinks at the starting gate, at 8 am isn't early enough for you?
I thought a Bloody Mary was a breakfast drink?

in Utah for six days.Look forward to seeing you there Scott.

I'll definitely be there. If you appreciate surf music this the event of the year!

Thanks for chiming in guys.

Jeff(btd)

Oh No! I'm going to miss this? I had the dates for the following weekend.
So sad
:(

CA

Everyone should go to this event... unless they are letting there backbone slip at a Funk Festive... Hmmmmm 'Dane to the Music" or "Walk Don't Run".......

Great Job with the Jeff Fest! should be bigger and better then ever. Just think 10 years from now you will be running around a venue the size of the Crown Plaza like a headless chicken dancing to 'Wipe-out!'

Also I never heard live Surf music at 10 in the morning. This will be a first.

Al, you're crazy.

John O.
Yes there is 2 or 3 bars at Starting Gate.
well I wish I could do it later in the day till midnite.
but I have to do it from 10 am to 8pm.
As they have oldies bands and dancing on weekend nights on a regular basis.

If we pack the place for this year.
maybe next year,I can ask them to move it later.

by the way.
The Glasgow Tiki Shakers
will be playing at Dons from 9pm to midnite after the convention.
(can you say after party?)

I"ll be there, but I don't know how early. However, 10am is not as early as it gets for surf bands--I know members of several surf bands over the years who have played really early, like 8am, for the runners of the Long Beach marathon. That's the dichotomy for surf music--most surfers start the day really early, most musicians start the day relatively late.

Brent,

thanks for comin'

and the HB marathon bands start at 7am.

but have to be there at 5:30 am to set up, before PCH closes.

Not sure we'll make it by 8, but I'm sure we'll roll in by 11 or so! Going to be a fun day!

J

Oh man I am so excited for this. I can't wait!!!

Looking at the line up for this, Jeff, you really outdid yourself this year!!

Thanks Josh.

Just got home from the Wadadli riders show at the Pike in Long Beach,
what a great band, they even sang some rare and fun surf vocals.
there was a few tiki peeps there.
Crazy Al, Jason Wickedly, and damn I always forget his name, but the short guy, with the Huge ZZ top beard
and some Surf Crowd locals, and a Guy from Colorado, and Nor. Cal. that are in town for the extended weekend.

after party at dons sat night with glasgow tiki shakers,
sun. at Suzy's in Hermosa Beach,
and then again back at Dons sun night, with Matt Q's wave machine.

Jeff(btd)

S

Sounds like fun, I'll try to make it!!

SK

I too am looking forward to this show. I didn’t make it to the previous SG101 shingdigs and am bummed about that.

I’m super excited to see the Space Cossacks. I haven’t seen them since I left the DC area for San Diego in 1999. I think they did play out here that same year at the Tiki in Pacific Beach but I didn’t make it to the show.

Aren’t the Insect Surfers originally from the that area too. I remember looking at an album of theirs YEARS ago back in Reptilian Records (RIP) in Baltimore and it stating they were from, or recorded in Northern Virginia.. I think if memory serves me well??
Anyhow, with my old stomping grounds being well represented by Atomic Mosquitoes and The Space Cossack in the lineup (no pun intended), it will take something big to keep me from the SG101 show. BTD if you could have gotten Monsters From the Surf booked too I probably would have overdosed on nostalgia.

So in true BigTikiDude fashion my agenda for this weekend is as follows:
Friday night- Space Cossack, Secret Samurai, and Frankie and the Poolboys show in San Diego
Saturday- SG101 show
Saturday night- Don’s for dinner and Glasgow tiki shakers and drink. Then drive back to San Diego.

I should cover 100’s of miles, three different surf shows, a tiki mecca and multiple cities in less than 48hrs. I think that should qualify as some sort of tikidude training?

Originating from a place where events like this were not common I’m truly thankful to have the opportunity to attend and am STOKED! BIG thanks BTD for putting it all together.

SF

WOW!!!

thanks so much for the Kudos.
be careful how much you suck up to me.
it could get you ostracized from the tiki community.

congrats on the multiple shows and many miles.
truly a very good job at supporting surf and tiki.
I commend you sir.

by the way I am a sofa spud, a rare offbreed of couch potatoes.

Jeff(btd)

Have fun for me guy's I wish it was next weekend....

I'll be there! Awesome line-up, Jeff!

Had to cut out at 3pm to catch a plane. I was able to enjoy the All-star Jam, Surfside IV, and the Wadadli Riders. What a great event !! Just one of the sets would have been worth the trip.

BigTikiDude had it running like a finely tuned surf guitar. He had to deal with technical issues (he got shocked by an amp chord), management issues (the music was too loud for the waitresses to hear orders), and herd the musicians on time. He did it all like a seasoned professional. I was impressed.

My favorite quote of the day: "It's fun but it's stressful."

Jeff, I think everyone attending appeciates your time, effort, and great Surf music expertise in putting the event together. Thank you !!

One interesting observation: The Surf music crowd doesn't really drink. I was told the Starting Gate was selling more food than booze !!
