Esquire's "daiquiri test" on rums

Pages: 1 6 replies

Here's a decent rum guide that gives some love to Smith & Cross and El Dorado: http://www.esquire.com/features/drinking/best-new-caribbean-rums-0910?src=rss

I'm a little bugged by the daiquiri test though. Surely there's a better cocktail to test out rums. What are your favorite "litmus test" cocktails?

The daiquiri is a classic for a reason. Clean, simple, features the rum.

A traditional grog (rum, water, lime, sugar) is also an option.

A good mai tai should be a decent test for a rum...no?

A Mai Tai is more a test for two rums.

+1 There are also more variables involved (curacao, orgeat). Figuring that white rums are generally not considered sipping rums, what else is better than sugar and limes? Mmmmmm!

but doesn't strawberry mask the rum in a daiquiri...

It is not THAT daiquiri, it is the classic daiquiri which is rum, lime and sugar.
