In case anybody will be happy or sad to know. . . . The June-July issue of Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion magazine has a tiny article on collecting vintage aloha shirts. It's this issue's story for their regular "Finders Keepers" collectibles column (last one was about toy dishes, and before that, antique shoe buckles). The article looked like it might be fun, but it was a little disappointing. Not much real content--nine brief paragraphs, mostly focused on comments from two guys--both designers, both from California--who collect vintage Hawaiian shirts. There are photos of eight shirts, plus four label close-ups, and there's a sidebar mentioning two Web URLs and two books. Worth a look if you like aloha shirts, though not, on its own, worth buying the magazine for. (I have a subscription, so I didn't have to worry about that part.) On the other hand, for collectors, it's probably good that it's not a big, fantastic, inspiring, informative article that will stir up even more competition. It's a tricky world, isn't it? Erika P.S. The books and URLs mentioned: [ Edited by: Erika on 2003-05-15 14:21 ] |

On the minus side, this will make things slightly tougher for shirt collectors. On the plus side there's still about half a billion 'lesser' shirts out there for the rest of us. (Just not that many featuring actual Tiki's, but dems da breaks). Trader Woody |
