The "New and Improved" Trader Vic's Hot Buttered Rum

Pages: 1 7 replies

I tested it tonight and my verdict: Tastes great but it's one sticky, slimy mess to spoon.

Anybody got some good HBR recipes? Anything without citrus is cool with me.

MMMMMMM Hot Buttered Rum,
think I will have one tonight at Don the Beachcomber.

The "new and improved" Trader Vic's Hot Buttered Rum Batter is AWFUL! Taste wise it's not bad, but it is not as good as the old one and is horrible to work with. It is like some plastic slime goop that I used to have as part of a toy as a kid. It doesn't come off the spoon, it gets all over everything and is a mess to clean up after.

I am not ever going to buy it again. It was always easier to use the Vic's batter than to make it from scratch, but that is no longer true. From now on I make the batter from scratch.

I agree that the new version has handling issues but I think the superior taste is worth it.

what kind of rum do you guys usually use?

at Dons, they use Lahaina Rum.
and It works well.
they were out last night, and used Myers,
and I didn't like it.
she added a bit of Cruzan Blackstrap and it helped a bit.
then I got one with Zacappa and it was amazing.

Soccer Tiki got one with Sailor Jerry, and it was ok.

then Art had one made with Seven Tiki Rum, and that was pretty good.

But the Zacappa was sublime.
but Zacappa is great strait.

I usually use Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum for my HBRs. A float of Cruzan Blackstrap sounds like a great idea though.

Montecristo Spiced is too good to just drink when mixed with the all natural Red Ram HBR Mix out of Georgetown, CO. I have never had better from a tub or bottle!
