Modern Voyaging Canoes in So Cal.

Pages: 1 13 replies

Apparently from New Zealand.
Located in Cabrillo Beach, So Cal.
They may be giving free rides this week.

My Coast Guard office is coordinating safety inspections with the vessels to see how many people they can take on tours. There is a documentary film following them down the coast. They are also reaching out to the Pacific "Islander communities to do educational outreach. They should be in San Pedro until the end of the week. Here is a link to the film crew:

The canoes are replicas of the traditional vaka moana canoes Pacific people used to explore and settle the tropical islands of the Pacific and New Zealand centuries ago.
The canoes, each about 70 feet long, carry a crew of 16 sailors from some of the smallest countries in the world, including the Cook Islands, Kiribati, Vanuatu and Tonga.

They began their trip in April from New Zealand, and sailed on the first leg to Hilo, in the Hawaiian Islands, navigating by the stars, as their ancestors did. However, the modern voyagers have canoes with hulls made of fiberglass instead of wood, and equipped with solar panels to power onboard equipment.
Though the ancient mariners steered by the stars, their descendants communicate on the Internet. The expedition has a website - http://www.pacificvoyagers.org - and they are on Facebook and Twitter as well.

There's a beach barbeque for the sailors and public tonight here in Malibu, after which the South Seas visitors head south to Baja California via San Diego. And then, later this fall, it's back home to the Pacific Islands.

Get all the details at Pacific Voyagers.

They'll be giving rides this morning as long as the wind stays down. Once the wind really starts blowing they'll stop the rides. If you want to go out for a sail, I suggest getting down to Cabrillo Beach before the wind picks up around 12noon. I do not, however, know when they are starting the rides.

Yesterday there was a huge celebration with traditional music and dances from the different Island nations and there may be more today as well.

Come on down and support this historic and educational event!

The Boo Tribe went today and we brought Crazy Al ( he'll have more pics).
Below is my Mom ( page 6 in Tiki Modern) and Charlie from Samoa. It was my Moms
B-day weekend so I made her a lei from my garden. Good times had by all.

Good son!

Since you were nearby, did you swing by Eli's old place to pay homage to the ancestors?

PolyJim-

22nd north of Pacific maybe 1 to 2 alleys on the right.

Took advantage of my unemployment today and went bodysurfing with my son Jack
and Mrs Boo. Jack and I were in the water and Mrs Boo was on shore. She came running
to the shore break pointing out into the sea. There were some dolphins eating and body surfing the outside break. Jack and I thought she was screaming about that. Turns out it was the Pacific Voyagers on the horizon going south. What an awesome sight!!! ( sorry no camera )

Thanks Ben!

Those vakas were a sight to see under full sail!
