Brevard Tiki Night - The Nova Rays on Sept 28, 2013

Pages: 1 24 replies

I'm helping put on a tiki night at Vintage 56 in Rockledge on June 23rd. I would really love to see as many tiki people as possible show up. There is going to be a Hawaiian buffet and I'll be part of the team making authentic tiki drinks. They will be served in a mug that you can bring home with you. Or bring your own mug and get a discount off of your first drink. I'm hoping that it's going to be a really fun evening and hopefully the first of many other themed nights at Vintage 56.

Check the attached flyer for more info.

When tiki bars first emerged in the mid-20th century, they evoked an idealized Polynesian paradise. Thanks to the creative mixology of Don the Beachcomber, Trader Vic and many imitators, tiki drinks were known for their exotic flavors, fresh-squeezed fruit juices, fine rums and potency. Relive this Polynesian pop era with true tiki drinks and delicious Hawaiian-inspired dishes during Tiki Night at Vintage 56 in Rockledge on Saturday, June 23, from 5 p.m. to close.

The restaurant will feature a special Hawaiian buffet from 6 to 9 p.m. — all you can eat for $18. It will include BBQ Rum Black Bean Soup, Vintage Spinach Salad, Mango Chili Glazed Chicken Thighs, Pineapple Jerked Pork Loin, Citrus Roasted Sweet Potatoes, Coconut Jasmine Rice, Citrus-Honey Smoked Carrots, and Plantain Mash. Patrons may also order from the restaurant menu.

Behind the bar, guest mixologists George Jenkins and Jimi Gonzalez will be making tiki-drink classics — the Zombie, the original formidable tiki drink; and the Mai Tai, the most popular tiki drink of all time — as they were meant to be served. They will also offer modern rum cocktails inspired by the tiki tradition.

Drinks will be served in keepsake tiki mugs; get a discount on your first drink if you bring your own tiki mug.

There is no cover charge. Reservations are suggested. Please call 321-639-4048.

Should have video coming up tomorrow. And if you are thinking of going, you might want to make reservations. The restaurant is already 50% reserved. Sounds like it's going to be a blast!

Last night was quite the success, even if I do say so myself. We had the entire restaurant reserved except for one or two tables from the second they opened. People stayed and drank tiki drinks and socialized until they literally had to throw everybody out. Had people from Orlando and all over the county show up. The owners are already discussing the next date with us. Hoping to perhaps grow the event a little the next time around. We'll see.

The owners must have had one too many of our drinks because they want to have another tiki night! Right now all we have is a date: August 11 and a theme: Mai Tai Mania. We are going to be serving 4 different types of Mai Tais! Watch this space for more details and a flyer coming soon!

We have moved the next Tiki Night to 18 August. More details to follow.

We have a flyer for the next tiki night. Buffet details to follow. Note that 10% of the bar proceeds go to the National Kidney Foundation in honor of Rick Salick. Rocket City Retro will be there vending mugs and other retro items. Watch this space for further details.

Another really fun event with the finest of company, perfect cocktails, delicious food, and a pleasing blend of classic and contemporary hapa haole and exotica music in the background. The Mai Tai menu...

My favorite was the classic 1944 Trader Vic's Mai Tai...

Our talented pair of mixologists were George Jenkins (TikiHardBop) and Jimi Gonzales...

Jimi Gonzalez...

Ed Volonnino of Ed's Heads Tikis brought along some of his work to realign the restaurant decor to the event...

The lomi lomi salmon (left) and ahi poke (right) were really good...

And the rest was equally delicious...

Chris Kridler (TornadoTiki) making sure everyone knew the cocktail choices...

Kathyrn Gonzalez and Christina Jordan (metikigal)...

The folks at the next table over were really enjoying their Mai Tais...

In honor of the release of the latest Bond film Skyfall and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first Bond film, the next Brevard Tiki night is going to be Tiki Goes Bond. Still working on the cocktail menu, but expect the same kind of fun stuff from the last two Tiki Nights. More details to follow:

Tiki Night guest bartenders Jimi Gonzalez and George Jenkins bring their mixology back to Vintage 56 on Nov. 10, celebrating the new James Bond film "Skyfall" with spy-themed cocktails. With an equal share of themed tiki drinks evocative of the Polynesian Pop craze and swank martinis like those quaffed by our favorite secret agent, from Spy Tais to the Vesper, this Tiki Night will be done in spy style. Guests are encouraged to dress the part, whether they be spy, villain or deadly damsel. The charity The Children's Hunger Project will receive 10 percent of bar sales.

The event takes place on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 5 p.m. to close. The restaurant's regular menu will be available to accompany the specialty cocktails. In the true tiki tradition, the drinks will employ fresh-squeezed juices and the best ingredients for a potent and flavorful experience.

Mr. Moto is still on assignment from Spy Oasis 2012 and has important Tiki business in Orlando from Nov 5-7. He is confirming with HQ if his Florida mission can be extended into the weekend.

Stay tuned. :)

That would be awesome! Let me know if you have any open time during your visit in any case. Would love to get together!

Just a last reminder that the Tiki Goes Bond night is coming up. Like all of the previous tiki nights, we expect this one to sell out so it's important to make your reservations now. I would hate to have to turn anyone away.

Will be posting pics from the event next week.

Not really an "official" Brevard Tiki night, but if the turnout is good, the owners are going to let us have a "real" tiki night in August. So come out The Nova Rays, straight back from the Hukilau and Ft. Luaderdale and the up-and-coming local rockabilly band The Blast-Offs. We are going to have a tropical buffet and tiki drinks by The Straw Hat Barmen. Essentially, the same cast of characters who brought you previous Brevard tiki nights, but at a different location. Hope to see everyone there!

The menu for the buffet. We are beginning to take table reservations as well.

We're cranking up the next Brevard Tiki Night this September 28th at Murdock's in Cocoa Village. The Nova Rays will be back and the newly-incorporated Staw Hat Barmen will be behind the bar personally mixing up some of their favorite tiki drinks that they enjoyed this summer. Hope to see everyone there:
