Experience Pagan love this holiday season as Don Tiki unleashes an exotic musical stage show

Honolulu's Don Tiki; the collaborative of top-tier musicians, vocalists and dancers that reinvented the jungle jazzy sounds of exotica, makes their Los Angeles debut on December 20, 2012 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall with a festive Hot Lava Holiday Show.

Drawing inspiration from the original Mid-Century masters of the exotica sound, Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman and Les Baxter, Don Tiki has moved this evocative genre of music into the 21st century.

After triumphant appearances bringing down the house headlining the 11th annual Tiki Oasis event in San Diego and their 2011 Pagan Holiday Show at the Doris Duke Theater in Honolulu, Don Tiki brings their vibrant and luscious stage show to Los Angeles.

Don Tiki features virile vocalist Delmar deWilde from Portland, bassist and purring song stylist Hai Jung from Phoenix, multi-talented Abe Lagrimas on vibes, percussion and guitar, chanteuse Sherry Shaoling from Los Angeles, plus special guests from Brazil Tita Lima and Carlinhos de Oliveira. They will join O'ahu-based members percussionist Lopaka Colon, who continues his illustrious father Augie Colon's bird call tradition, funky drummer Jason Segler, Tim Mayer on reeds, bandleader Kit "Perry Coma" Ebersbach on keyboards, Ryoko Oka on keyboards and t'rung (a Vietnamese bamboo xylophone), MC Lloyd "Fluid Floyd" Kandell and dancer Violetta Beretta.

The band will perform their signature tunes such as "The Natives Are Restless" and "An Occasional Man"."Even though we're tiki-worshipping Pagans, we'll drop a holiday song or two," says Kandell, who was one of Anthony Bourdain's drinking guides when the food impresario visited O'ahu for his series No Reservations in 2008. Bourdain came away raving, "Tiki supergroup Don Tiki knows the world, the subculture of tiki...it really doesn't get much better than this!"

Don Tiki is a creative collaboration of Kit Ebersbach and Lloyd Kandell. The band features Hawaii's top musicians, with cumulative experience ranging from punk to jazz fusion to world beat. Don Tiki has played everywhere from local tiki dives to the Honolulu Symphony, and from Waikiki and Las Vegas showrooms to headlining the sold-out Wassermusik festival in Berlin.

I heard them talking about this show on the Cocktail Nation podcast. It sounds like it will be a really cool show. I am gonna try to see if Mrs Chippy and I can attend as an early Christmas treat.

Violetta Beretta sez "You and Mrs. Chippy better not miss our Hot Lava Holiday Show!"

Hey, check out this in-depth, rave review that was posted just a few days ago: http://www.ambientexotica.com/exorev096_dontiki_sdwdt/

It reviews our 2001 release, "Skinny Dip with Don Tiki." A lot of the songs we perform live come from this album.
Hope it motivates YOU to come see our show at the Walt Disney Conceryt Hall on December 20!

Cheers~ FF

The Don Tiki Tribe is shocked and saddened by the sudden loss of of our dear colleague Fritz… a rare spirit and charismatic guy. Always upbeat, full of life, humor, and creativity.
He left us burning bright on the Stairway to Heaven: http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/19200806/man-dies-while-hiking-stairway-to-heaven

Fritz "Delmar deWilde" Hasenpusch, R.I.P.

Yes, he will be very hard to replace but we know in our hearts that he would want "the show to go on" in true entertainer fashion.
As you know, we have some very important gigs at the end of the year here in Honolulu and at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA.
We have a few people in mind and we'll let you know if it works out to save the unique and Forbidden World of Don Tiki.

Aloha,
FF

DON TIKI'S HOT LAVA HOLIDAY SHOW Comes to Los Angeles, 12/20

Honolulu's legendary Don Tiki - the collaborative of stellar musicians, vocalists and dancers that reinvented the jungle jazzy sounds of exotica - brings a bit of sunshine and family-friendly fun to the season with the first-ever Los Angeles performance of Don Tiki’s Hot Lava Holiday Show, Thursday, December 20 at 8:00 PM at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

The creative collaboration of producer Lloyd Kandell and band leader Kit Ebersbach, Don Tiki draws inspiration from the original Mid-Century masters of the exotica sound including Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman and Les Baxter. Denny gave the band his seal of approval when he played on their 1997 debut album, The Forbidden Sounds of Don Tiki.

For their one-night-only Los Angeles appearance the band will be performing signature tunes such as “The Natives Are Restless” and “An Occasional Man” from all four of Don Tiki’s releases, The Forbidden Sounds of Don Tiki, Skinny Dip with Don Tiki, Don Tiki Adulterated - The Remix Project, and their latest release, South of the Boudoir, which won The Hawaii Music Awards’ Adult Contemporary Album of the Year.

“We’ll drop six new holiday songs to get into the spirit of things,” says producer Lloyd “Fluid Floyd” Kandell. Band leader Kit “Perry Coma” Ebersbach adds, “We were asked to add tiki holiday songs to our holiday show, and, as such a thing doesn’t exist, it was my challenge to compose some new Christmas songs as well as do some exotica arrangements of traditional holiday tunes for our singers and musicians to perform.”

Don Tiki has played everywhere from local tiki dives to the Honolulu Symphony to Waikiki showrooms to glitzy Las Vegas palaces to headliners at a summer music festival in Berlin and Tiki Oasis in San Diego. When they appeared on Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations, the food impresario came away raving, "Tiki supergroup Don Tiki knows the world, the subculture of tiki...it really doesn't get much better than this!"

Comprised of Hawaii’s top musicians, the Don Tiki troupe consists of band leader and composer, Kit "Perry Coma" Ebersbach on keyboards; bassist and purring song stylist Hai-Jung; Charles Degala and Tei Tatafu, Jr. on virile vocals; vocalist, dancer and comedienne Sherry Shaoling; percussionist Lopaka Colón, who continues his illustrious father Augie Colón's jungle and bird call tradition; tenor ace Tim Mayer on reeds; multi-talented Abe Lagrimas, Jr. on vibes and percussion; tribal drummer Jason Segler; space-age Ryoko Oka on keyboards and t'rung (a Vietnamese bamboo xylophone); exotic dancer Violetta Beretta; plus special guest artist Frank Orrall of Thievery Corporation and Poi Dog Pondering. Don Tiki is also honored to bring to the stage special guest artists, legendary SOCAL tiki-shaman Crazy Al, rising Brazillian star Tita Lima and Brazil's golden tambourine, Carlinhos de Oliveira.

The concert is a tribute to the memory of Delmar deWilde (aka Fritz Hasenpusch), Don Tiki’s front man, who passed away this year while hiking the Stairway to Heaven trail in Honolulu.

Did you read that?

I think it is awesome that Don Tiki is coming to Disney hall! Bringing tiki to a large audience is always a great thing! I would like to see Disney hall book some other great bands that do tiki, like Mr. Ho's orchestra, the tikiyaki orchestra, Martini Kings, etc....

The hall itself is fantastic! The architecture is amazing!

I have some personal experience there, and I have to say it was really, really cool playing there and hanging around the green room and knowing the people that have been there....can you say Gustavo?

This is me, last summer.

I think I have just been shaolinged!

Pretty excited to see Don Tiki again (and to see the concert hall, I've never been). I've been playing the new holiday EP quite a bit and expect it'll be a blast to hear live. Based on their performance at Tiki Oasis 11, this show should be really fun.

LAist posted a short Q&A piece with Kit Ebersbach on the upcoming Don Tiki show on their site today.

Can't wait 4 2night. :)

H

I would LOVE to be there. I just wish my Entertainment budget felt the same way. In the meantime, I'm saving up for the next Tiki Oasis!!

Hopefully some video recordings of what I'm missing tonight will surface. Post your links here!

Two 40 minute or so sets, kinda short. Great costumes and dancing. Crazy Al almost got speared a few times. Good songs and musicianship but would have liked to have heard more variety. One pretty good Hawaiian number, a couple of numbers from Brazil. Sound system didn't help the vocals. Very good in my opinion, but not great.
