What grit sandpaper do you use on bamboo poles before polyurethane?

Just 220 grit is fine. You can go finer if you really want, but 220 seems enough to remove the waxy film without unduly scratching it up.

I use a medium to coarse grade steel wool.

I prefer the results much more than sand paper.
