Ahhh, a finer tome than this could not follow the original. Chock full of great old clip art and insider history from long gone watering holes, even more than previously, it features the believed to be lost formulas for such classics as the Mr. Bali Hai, the Zombie, Hawaiian Eye, Martiki, Skipper Kent's Planter's Punch, and many more concoctions from important Tiki temples like the Tiki Ti. Kevin Kidney added some fine caricatures of Tony Ramos, Mike and Mike at the Tiki Ti, Don, and the Bum himself. I am so glad when Tiki is done justice. On a down note, I went by the GROVE today, the new luxury mall in Hollywood that has Farmer's Market regulars moaning and cussing because of the increased yuppie traffic. I was curious about the NEW "Madame Wu's" they put up there, and I must say they did a good job, but when I asked the owner (presumably) if they ever had considered hiring Tony Ramos as head bar tender again he said "No, these guys are just too old." ....which is just such absolutely ignorant @#%? B.S.! [ Edited by: bigbrotiki on 2002-06-28 20:04 ] |

I agree. Intoxica is great! I have a question though. Under the falernum section, he mentions that Grog readers say that two brands of falernum are available that I've never tried namely, J.D. Taylor and Hanschell Inniss. Can anyone tell me where I can order these from?? Thanks. |

Got my copy of "Intoxica" on Saturday that mrsmiley picked up for me in Palm Springs. It exceeded my expectations! I thought it was going to be an update to the Grog Log but it has completely different recipes, most original with a few new ones thrown in. It's going to take me a while to go through them as there are more drinks in it than are in the Grog Log. I was pleased to see some Don the Beachcomber recipes that aren't in the book on Don, and even a recipe from the Tiki Ti! Had some friends over on Sat. night for BBQ and tried the Dr. Funk and Volcano recipes. I was making the first round of Dr. Funks and I was thinking 2.5 ounces of lime juice in one drink seems like an awful lot! I assumed that it's a misprint because it also calls for a half-ounce of lemon juice, so I used a half-ounce of lime juice per drink. They came out great, but you might want to reduce the amount of Pernod (1/4 ounce) a wee bit if you don't like the taste of Pernod (I happen to like it). The Volcano bowl came out tasty too. The best tropical drink book out there is now "Intoxica" (followed closely by the Grog Log). Get it! Herf wrote: Can anyone tell me where I can order these from??" I don't know where those brands are sold. The last place I found it in San Francisco no longer has it (I just called them). I know Davinci Gourmet makes it but I have not tried it. |
