Papa's Pilar Rum

Pages: 1 11 replies

Has anyone tried the new Papa's Pilar Rum? It's inspired by Ernest Hemingway and has the blessing of the Hemingway family.

I'm a huge Hemingway nerd, so I had to pick up a bottle once I read about it. I tried the blonde this past weekend. It was definitely a unique rum. I tried it with pineapple juice. That was ok, not amazing. I plan on trying a few of the recipes on their facebook page this weekend. Their website is pretty cool. The bottle is pretty cool as well.

Has anyone else tried it? thoughts?

Glad you shared this, I will see if I can find it locally and what the price is. If nothing else, their bottles would make an interesting gift for the more adventurous sorts out there.

I went to their web site. They definitely have unique and interesting bottles. I thought they seem to want to say "I'm unique" and "I'm competing for the buyer's eye on the shelf" and "marketing overload" if you know what I mean.

I didn't see any age statement on the bottles. Someone once pointed out that there are a lot of undersold distilleries around the world, and lots of venture capitalists, and if you can bring the two together to market the hell out of a "new" rum, you might hit a home run even if the rum is not top shelf.

i've seen it around. iirc it's over $30 a bottle, doesnt identify the source of the rum, and is bottled in the U.S.

I expected to add nothing to this thread (except my below pic & book query).

Wow, their website is good - actually I was most impressed by their product detailing before I got to the 'history of rum' & 'hemmingway' bit.

Here's some reviews of the rum:

I'll def pick some up, looks great :)

Have you read 'To Have and Have Another: A Hemingway Cocktail Companion'?

It's recipes from the books.

Mug from Cheeky Tiki, rum from Cuba!

Hemmingway sure was a character :)

I've definitely read To Have and Have Another. Great book. I'm currently attempting to read everything Hemingway ever wrote. It's a pretty daunting task.

drinking through "The Sun Also Rises" is a challenge...

did he name the Pilar after the character in For Whom The Bell Tolls, or vice versa?

Pilar was a nickname for his wife Pauline, according to wiki.

Web site says they brought "together rums from throughout the Caribbean, Florida and Central America" and blended them.

Heheh... The translation of the above could be:
"We bought a bunch of inexpensive rums from hungry distilleries, blended and bottled 'em."

TikiTomD mentioned the Flagler Spirits distillery here in Palm Coast, FL, in another thread:

So I wonder if some of the Flagler rum may be included in the Papa's Pilar rum blend?

I like that the special edition comes with a small notepad and pen so you can write down your brilliant drunk thoughts like the tape recorder episode of "That 70's Show" :D

(duh- I forgot to add the photo!)

nice, that's the way hem wrote.

Found a bottle at Total Wine in Sac. Ca

I always buy the new rum out there to try and honestly, I haven't been happy with any of them lately, This one is just another marketing ploy.

Even the bottle it came in was cheessy. At least the Kirk and Sweeny Co put out a great package for their cheap rum. In both cases I could of had a Bottle of El Dorado 15ys at the same price point.

Next time, I'll just but lighter fluid instead and save my money.
