Recap of Last Week Follows the Invite

Where: House of Foong Lin, 4613 Willow Lane, Bethesda, MD 20877
Time: From 6 pm to Close. Some groups arrive early, with most people arriving between 7 and 7:30. Kitchen closes at 10, but the bar stays open as long as we're there (or until the County makes them close :wink: )

Sadly, the Washington, DC region gave up all of it's Tiki glory years ago.
Trader Vic's closed down almost 20 years ago, and the last true Washington Tiki Bar, The Honolulu, closed 10 years ago. We are, however, fortunate that House of Foong Lin still keeps a torch burning with the area's widest selection of Tiki Drinks and even some classic Polynesian dishes to enjoy. (They still serve a Pu-Pu Platters with a wooden server and flaming hibachi in the center)

Wearing Tiki / Hawaiian / Island wear is not required, but strongly encouraged and rewarded. All first timers and those wearing some kind of Tiki / Hawaiian / Island wear will be entered into our weekly drawing. The prize will be (at minimum) a $5 Tiki Thirstday certificate, good for your next visit to Tiki Thirstday. A special door prize of a $20 Tiki Thirstday gift certificate will be drawn when we have an evening where we have 25 or more attending our Tiki Thirstday. All entries stay in the door prize pool, so the more often you visit and qualify, the better your chances are of being picked.

EASY PARKING: There is a 200 space municipal parking lot directly across the street.

House of Foong Lin's charm is that they are an old school Chinese/Asian restaurant that kept the classic Tiki drinks going long after they all but disappeared from most menus. They have also been amazingly receptive to the local Ohana that have discovered this non-trendy oasis. They have brought in special rums to cater to their Tiki regulars, upped their game with several drink additions to the menu (a very respectable Black Magic, a Mai Tai '44 and Mai Tai 52, among them). Also, the food is absolutely first rate - some of the very best Chinese food in the Washington, DC area.

33 was the magic number last Thirstday night and we had a blast. Last week's numbers marked the 3rd week out of the last 4 weeks that we had well over 30 "merry souls" enjoying Washington's Weekly Tiki Night Out.

Many tales of Hukilau were shared over icy Mai Tais, Fog Cutters, Dark & Stormys, and other great Tiki drinks.

When is your Birthday? Send me your birthday date and we will raise a toast to you on the Tiki Thirstday closest to the actual date of your birthday. If your birthday actually falls ON one of our Tiki Thirstdays AND you let me know well ahead of time, there may be something special in store for you.

A special shout out to DC area Tiki Central ohana...

We hope you take the time to drop by a Tiki Thirstday some time soon. When a few of us (myself, TikiGAP, MoaiMiki, and others) first started going, the only thing Tiki about the place was a handful of Tiki drinks and a few mugs. Over time, as we got to know the owners, we helped shape the bar menu - getting them to add a true to the Trader's recipe Mai Tai and eventually several more classics (many from recipes shared right here at TC). Today the bar has a solid Tiki drink menu of over 20 drinks. (Including the only other Black Magic worth drinking this side of the Mai-Kai) As we started having our Tiki Thirstdays, and more local tikiphiles started coming, the owners have upped the ante by thatching the bar, getting a new music system to play Exotica and other mood setting music, and are now shopping for new tiki themed table clothes and tiki shirts for the staff. The place, especially on Thursday nights is a great deal more Tiki than it once was and much more Tiki than anyplace else in the DC area.

Give 'er a try. A quality Mai Tai is waiting for you, and most importantly, good company there to share it with.

Come on out folks, it's a really great place, great crowd, great cocktails, great vibe, great food, and great time! Thirst-days are the better for it!

There are four elements to a great tiki bar: the drinks, the music, the ohana, and the decor. This place has 3 1/4, not too bad. It is a great place. The 1944 Mai Tai is a killer, and you can't find the 52 Mai Tai anywhere else in the world. Not exactly tiki decor, but that is growing. Oh, and the food is really good, too. It's all exotica on Thursdays and you'll meet the friendliest people in town, so come and check it out! I'm glad I did.

Mahalo nui loa, Jeff! Thanks for organizing these! Becca and I had a great time (as always) last night. I think I've a shot of us with a volcano bowl from a few weeks ago...

Count me (and hopefully Becca, too) in for next week! I gotta have another mai tai '52!
