I haven't been here yet - my bullshit radar told me to stay away... and judging by this review (and 'Chrissys' endorsement) I was right to run far far away....

For chrissakes, there a 4 million people in Toronto, can't SOMEONE open a decent tiki bar? Can Trader Vic's come back? Do I have to do it myself?

"Gag me with a spoon" !

I thought this was going to be a thread of old mid-1970's through 1980's expressions.

"Up your nose with a rubber hose!" (yeah, I watched Welcome Back Kotter), or since I am in the beach area: "Gnarly dude".

Oops, did I just make it one of those threads?

TikiFish, make a trip to California, we'll take care of your tiki craving.

SugarCaddyDaddy's SoCal Hoity Toity Schedule!

Whatchoo talkin' bout, WillisCaddyDaddy?

HEY HEEY HEY. What's happenin ?

S

This hijackin' posts is NC - no class.

Hey, I've already been to San Francisco 3 times and LA twice.

Where I really need to go is Easter Island...

Yeah, but your trips didn't include the Hoity Toity's, right?

You know what they say, "once you go Hoity Toity, you'll never go back"....er..um...something like that.

I'm 'readin you, fish. Now, this is but my little opinion (which one can appraise as they please), but it still amazes me, considering all of the resources available on the tiki style now (The B.O.T. pretty much lays it down), what it was about, it's origins, what came together to present the illusion, the utterly entrancing, stress-melting, effect that tiki had on the populace when it was done RIGHT, suppliers of great tiki merch (as well as crap) coming out of the woodwork to get their wares to them, and the basic fact that it's gotten easier AND cheaper to do it right in the past couple of years, -that 99.9 percent of the nincompoop entrepenuers that find the capitol to start up a "tiki" place don't even bother to research, decorate with any taste or tradition, or even attempt to give a starved public ANY sort of quality whatsoever. It seems like it's all on the Wal-Mart standard now, which is "assume the public are idiots and don't want quality". They could learn so much with just one field trip to Trader Vic's, The Mai Kai, The Tonga Room, etc. But they don't bother. They want it fast and easy, therefore their places don't last, either. I want soooo bad to one day open up a new tiki temple that really IS a tiki temple. Nothing but the good stuff.

C'mon, Chrissy and her friend's "loved the special attention given to the bathrooms". How bad can it be?

On sort of a side note - MartiniBoys.Com? It's page states something to the effect that it gives you a heads up on the 'hip' things to do.

Jesus Christ (and not in a good way), why would someone be such a clueless sheep as to have to ask directions for 'hip' things to do? (if indeed one wanted to do 'hip' things). And wouldn't 'hip' mean that not everyone is doing it?

I've never wanted to be 'hip'. I don't play sports, don't watch TV (OK, C-SPAN and Sponge Bob), am repulsed by 'beautiful' women that wouldn't talk to me anyway, don't watch movies (OK porno), hate rap, don't know shit about good wine, don't know and don't care much about electronic gadgets, and I like Baxdog.

The things I enjoy the most are pretty much the same things people have been doing for the last 100 years.

Want to be my friend?

I'll be your friend!

Apparently there are a lot of people like 'Chrissy' out there who need a website like that to tell them where to go.

Poor Chrissy.

I think being hip is overdone. I'm going to be elbow for a while.

No doubt that includes funny bone, PJ. :D

Tiki Bong, I'd be proud, proud I say, to be your friend.

Tikifish: It is all gloriously, fabulously true about the Hoiti Toities.

Re: Chrissy...is that as in "Three's Company"???

Speakeasies are on my list of overdone things to move on from.

The next time someone sends me to "find a secret bar entrance" of some sort I'm going to have to puke on their shoes.

Seriously, if you're opening a speakeasy, or converting something into a speakeasy, you're YEARS late and I will laugh at you. A very good craft bar near me just did this. Although their drinks and bartenders are awesome, their attempt to make their front entrance room look like a post office is, well, droll.

droll (adjective)
/drôl/
Curious or unusual in a way that provokes dry amusement.
synonyms: funny, humorous, amusing, comic, comical, mirthful, hilarious

With one exception, I hope!

You're gonna miss out on Tiki Cat!

Hi Ben. I didn't say I wouldn't go, I just said that there are a lot of latecomers to the "hey, we've got a secret door, we're a speakeasy!" concept. And I was definitely trying to be tongue-in-cheek to go along with the thread title.

This is a good discussion point though, and especially given your extensive experience with designing and building tiki bars. I believe the two concepts (tiki and the speakeasy) are from two completely different timeframes. But it's not that they cannot be joined today - why not? But I do wonder if, in mid-century America, there ever were any tiki bars that were also themed as speakeasies or had speakeasy elements?

Thanks for the Tiki Cat pic, it looks insanely amazing, you're teasing us! I'm really glad I made my original post -- that's pic is quite a "reward." Let's see... What else can I write to get you to post more pics here for us? :)
