From a July 24th New York Times article by William L. Hamilton titled "Geographic Explores The Land of Decor":"(The) National Geographic Society...is introducing a licensed collection of home furnishings in October...The collection will be based on images and objects in the society's archives, like old maps, carvings, and textiles...The furniture sales tags will tell the stories behind the styles or motifs employed, whether a temple or tribal carving or an animal-print fabric, in a bid to avoid being the new Tiki of the 21st Century." |

So they are putting these tags on their products and this will hopefully keep the items from becoming...collectible? |

Sounds like the pooh-pooh old Persian Rug and Cigars-By-The-Fireplace private club that the National Geographic Society is. |

You know they're all dancin in loud tropical shirts, drinks a-sloshin all over them there persian rugs whilst primitva blasts from the best speakers money can buy. I think if they have something that looks cool, and I can afford it, I'll buy it, and put it up in my "tiki of the 21st century" collection. Then I'll take a picture of it, and send it to them to spite them. |

I think they meant that they are trying to create something timeless rather than kitchy. Remember, tiki fell out of popular culture in the early to mid seventies and was looked at as gaudy. I think that's what they are trying to avoid with this collection. Don't take it personally. |

It sounds like they're just trying to copy Bombay Company and Peir 1. A bunch of pirates: http://pyracy.com/forums |

Geographic wants to use varios culchers as sorces for decrative items, but they dont want to look like they're just using the cultures as sources for decorative items...So a tag with a bit of a story and hey presto, you're not just plundering the world for a quaint exotic look. |
