Tiki Restaurants

Pages: 1 11 replies

Aloha -
I am actively seeking a tiki/polynesian themed restaurant for filming in the greater Southern California area. The scenes are set in 1965 at a resort hotel restaurant/bar in Hawaii so we are thinking that heavy bamboo, faux palm trees etc. would be great. The larger the space the better and an attached patio area is a bonus. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance
Alex Reid

Hi, could you please tell me a little more about your project?
I'm curious.

Axlereid,
Welcome to Tiki Central.

A few Places that come to mind are the following:

1 - Bali Hai in San Diego - a few hawaiian themed resorts near (Humphrey's)

2 -The Royal Hawaiian in Laguna Beach

3 - Maybe Dukes' (at the pier) in Huntington Beach?

Check out the "Locating Tiki" board on Tiki Central, it may be of some use to you. Good luck!

Axlereid,

If you're in need of a hapa haole hawaiian band, let me know. We're based in the Huntington Beach/Newport Beach area. Best of all, we'll do it for free!

Aloha and Welcome Alex Reid~

I take it that you, at this time, are acting as location scout for your film.

One thing I would like to point out, and suggest, is that you may want to take advantage of utilizing many of our Tiki Central members as extras for your film. Why? Because we, as a group, will have more enthusiasm for your film than any casting director can get. Also, we probably have more authentic aloha shirts, skirts, dresses, jackets, and wardrobe as a whole for that time period you are seeking. In addition, we do have members that have already done films, as actors, extras, set designers, wardrobe consultants, etc., and understand that scenes are not just done in one take, and since we all enjoy each other's company, you won't have a bunch of people who don't know each other just "doing another job".

Oh, and not to forget...we do have quite a few accomplished musicians to offer live entertainment.

Indeed there are! You can't go wrong with either The Smokin' Menehunes and/or my own little combo, The Maikai Gents Featuring The Mysterious Miss Mauna Loa! Available for anniversaries, confirmations, bar-mitzvahs, the anniversary of the confirmation of your bar-mitzvah, film, tv, puppet theatre, supermarket free sample promotions, and anywhere else old-time Hawaiian crooning is called for.

Also recommend The Reef restaurant in Long Beach harbor next to the Queen Mary. The restaurant itself has burned down a couple times in its history, but their Luau Room in particular still has the appropriate decor, also with a dedicated patio overlooking the harbor.

Billy's By The Beach in Newport is also Polynesian and has an attached outdoor patio that is decorated similarly.

Sabu,

You forgot that Billy's told us never to come back after the little OC Tiki Crawl III incident(s).

Bong's right. Billy's. Nice place, shitty people. Don't bother.

Friends -
Thank you all for the wonderful recomendations. We are sifting through the locations and we hope to nail down the winner sometime in early January. I will let you all know when we select one to shoot.
Thanks again
Alex
